A Maserati transmission problem shows in 6 ways. 3 are cluster warnings: the transmission temperature light, Transmission Limp Home Mode and the AWD system service message. The other 3 are a PRND button that needs repeated presses, an MC20 fluid life prompt and a knock between D and R.
On a 2024 Ghibli, this light and its message mean the transmission fluid temperature is rising. Maserati has the driver pull over, select P and idle until the light goes out. We trace the heat to its source, from the fluid level to the gearbox cooling circuit, and repair it.
A 2024 Ghibli switches to this mode when it detects a condition that can damage the gearbox. The car can then run in certain gears alone or stop shifting, and the engine can stall. We repair a sensor or wiring fault behind it, and a fault inside the gearbox goes to a Maserati dealer.
On a Grecale, GranTurismo or GranCabrio, the chosen gear can fail to engage until the PRND button is pressed again. Maserati's fix is new software for the gear shift module, which it replaces when the module is dead or holds internal fault codes. A Maserati dealer loads that software, and we pass the car on for it.
The 2025 MC20 carries a transmission fluid life monitor. When it reports low remaining fluid life, Maserati calls for new fluid and a new external filter as soon as possible. We change both, using the dual-clutch fluid Maserati specifies.
A Grecale, GranTurismo or GranCabrio can knock from the front axle area when shifting between D and R at parking speed. Maserati's fix reconditions the flange-to-shaft joint on the front axle transfer case. We refit that flange re-indexed on its shaft, with fresh grease on its splines and a sound circlip.
On a 2024 Levante or AWD Ghibli, this message means the AWD system is not working properly. It can also mean recovery mode after overheating from excessive wheel spin, with the rear wheels alone driving the car. When the message keeps returning, we find the failed AWD part and replace it.

The gearbox electronics of a 2024 Ghibli provide a precise shift schedule. With the specified fluid at the correct level, the gearbox follows that schedule again.
Limp home mode can leave a 2024 Ghibli with certain gears or none, and with severely degraded performance. A repaired fault returns all forward gears and full pace.
On a 2024 AWD Ghibli, the AWD system redirects torque to the front and rear wheels to keep wheel slip down. With its fault repaired, the car stops falling back to rear-wheel drive.

The fluid changes a Maserati gearbox needs depend on its type. On a 2024 Ghibli V8 or V6, Maserati does not change the 8-speed fluid in scheduled maintenance. On a 2025 MC20, Maserati renews the gearbox fine filter at every service, set every 15,000 km or 12 months.
Its gearbox oil and suction filter are renewed at fixed services. We carry out the 8-speed fluid and filter change, and the MC20 filter changes at the services that list them.

The job card first records the engine temperature, the traffic, any ramp, the gear in use and the cluster message. Our road test then repeats those conditions.
We read the fault codes stored in the engine and gearbox control units. A gearbox fault can light the engine warning with a generic code, while the detail sits in the gearbox unit. The stored code decides which sensor, wire or part we replace.
We drive the car under the noted conditions until the fault shows, so the repair targets what the driver felt.
Drained oil that smells burnt, or holds chips or metal fragments, comes from a damaged transmission. The pan magnet shows how much wear debris the oil holds. A gearbox with these signs goes to a Maserati dealer for internal repair.
On a 2024 Ghibli, the transmission cooling system has its own reservoir, filled with the same coolant as the engine. We read its level the way the engine coolant is read and top it up with the same mix.

Supplementary additives and cleaning agents stay out of every gearbox we fill. The fluid goes in as its maker supplies it.
Once a torque-converter 8-speed has its new fluid, our technician runs the engine for 30 seconds at 2,000 rpm. The converter fills with oil in that time.
During our fluid work, the engine never runs while the gearbox is empty. The new fluid goes in before the first start.
Where the gearbox pan carries an integrated filter and seal, we replace the pan as one unit. A metal pan gets a new filter and sealing ring instead.
Before track use, Maserati asks for extra 2025 MC20 gearbox oil above the normal fill. After a set amount of track use, it calls for new gearbox oil and a new fine filter, and we carry out both.
Maserati's front flange knock rework uses a puller sold on the open market. That rework is done at our workshop.

On 2024 UAE cars, the Ghibli V8 and V6 drive through an 8-speed automatic with a torque converter. It sits in a transaxle layout with a rear self-locking differential.
The 2024 Levante V8 and V6 pair an 8-speed automatic with AWD and an electronically controlled central transfer case. The 2025 MC20 uses an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, also in a transaxle layout.

Leaving P needs both electrical contacts under the button to close, for safety and regulatory reasons. Maserati advises pressing firmly in the centre of the button, with more than one finger if needed. With Maserati's newer shifter software, a felt click registers each of the other shifts.
Yes. A 2024 Ghibli has a manual park release for pushing or towing the car when the gearbox cannot leave P, as with a discharged battery. The parking brake is released by hand as well. Maserati asks for proper towing or lifting equipment to prevent damage.
Yes. The 2025 Grecale Folgore and the 2025 GranTurismo Folgore each have a one-speed transmission behind their electric drive. Neither has the stepped automatic of a Ghibli.
The gearbox electronics of a 2024 Ghibli calibrate themselves as the car is driven. Maserati states that shift behaviour can take hundreds of km to reach its expected quality. A harsh shift that lasts beyond that distance is a reason to have the gearbox checked.
