Overview

How can you tell a car needs PPF?

Any 1 of 6 signs means a car is ready for PPF or window film. Paint protection film answers 4: stone chips, etched spots, faded paint and old film lifting at its edges. Window film answers the other 2: a hot cabin and sun on the skin through the side glass.

Stone chips on the nose

Jaguar tells owners of the EURO-edition XF to repair stone chips and deep scratches promptly, since bare metal corrodes quickly. We refinish the chip in our body shop and then cover the panel with clear film.

Etched spots from droppings and insects

On UK-edition Land Rover cars, Land Rover classes bird droppings, tree resin, dead insects and tar spots as corrosive substances that can damage the paintwork. We clean the deposit away and fit film across the bonnet and mirrors, so new deposits land on the film.

Faded or yellowing paint

Paint research shows photooxidation starts when the paint absorbs UV light, and it breaks the coating down chemically. The end result can be lost gloss, a colour shift, yellowing, cracks or peeling. We polish oxidised gloss paint back to an even finish before any film covers it.

Old film lifting at its edges

High-pressure spray aimed at film edges can lift the edges and damage the film. We replace the lifted piece of film with a new one.

A hot cabin after parking

A UAE University study in Al Ain found shaded white cars averaging 41.8 °C in the cabin, with the outside air at 37.4 °C. Their body panels averaged 47.4 °C. We fit heat-rejecting window film to cut that heat at the glass.

Sun on the skin through the side glass

A 2016 study tested the glass of 29 cars. Their windscreens averaged 96 per cent UV-A blockage and their side windows 71 per cent, with single side windows from 44 to 96 per cent. We fit a UV-blocking film to the side glass.

What it covers

What our car PPF service includes

Our car PPF service covers the paint and the glass:

  • Paint inspection with photos of unsound areas
  • Hand wash, clay and isopropyl panel wipe
  • Removal of old PPF and its adhesive
  • Clear PPF on the bonnet, bumper, wings and mirrors
  • Full-body paint protection film
  • Film trimmed at each panel seam
  • Radar sensor and camera areas left clear
  • Side and rear window film
  • Rear screen cleaning that protects the heater lines

Paint protection film is a clear polyurethane film with an acrylic adhesive. One film measures 0.152 mm thick, or 0.203 mm with its adhesive. Ceramic coating and full window tinting choices each have their own page on our site.

What we see

What causes paint damage and cabin heat in Dubai?

Paint damage and cabin heat in Dubai have 6 causes: sand and stones, dust storms, UV light, panel heat, coastal air and infrared heat. The first 5 act on the paint and its clear coat. The sixth acts on the cabin, through glass that has no film.

  • Sand and stones: in lab research, stones, small sand particles and road debris erode car paint, shown as gloss loss.
  • Dust storms: Kuwaiti owners surveyed found dust storms abraded the front paintwork worst, then the windscreen, more so against the wind or faster.
  • UV light: research shows the clear coat's UV absorber is used up outdoors, and clear coat photooxidation can lead to cracking.
  • Panel heat: in sunlight the roof, the bonnet and the boot lid run hot, and higher panel temperatures can speed up coating degradation.
  • Coastal air: a Saudi Gulf coast study rated heat, humidity, oil-burning gases, sea salt and desert sand as an aggressive combination for car paint.
  • Infrared heat: infrared radiation through the glass heats the cabin. Hyundai Motor and Kia measured test cars with regular glass at 48.5 °C inside, and cars with their cooling film at 36.0 °C.

Over 1991 to 2020, August brought the hottest day measured at Dubai International Airport, at 48.8 °C. Its record for 1981 to 2010 counts 17.7 days annually with rising sand.

We read the wear on the bonnet edge, the bumper and the mirror caps, then fit film to the panels that show it.

Benefits of car paint protection film and car window tinting

Film fitted to clean, sound paint and glass changes what sun, sand and stones can reach on your car.

Fewer stone chips

Paint protection film guards paint against stone chips and scratches, and one film passes a standard gravel impact test. We fit it to the panels that meet the road first.

Light scratches that close

Light scratches in one self-healing film close by themselves at room temperature.

Stains that stay on the film

The film takes bug damage, road tar, stains and automotive fluid stains in place of the paint.

Paint that keeps its colour

Paint protection film shields the finish from outdoor weathering, including harsh UV radiation. We fit full-body film for cars that stand in the open sun.

A cooler cabin

One nano-multilayer window film rejects 97 per cent of the infrared in the 900 to 1,000 nm band. The same film blocks 69 per cent of the sun's infrared energy.

UV kept off your skin

That film also blocks 99.9 per cent of UV on clear glass and on tinted factory glass.

In Dubai conditions

What is the legal window tint limit in Dubai?

Dubai's legal window tint limit is 50 per cent of the interior visibility level, applied to side and rear glass only. The amended federal traffic rules set that level from 1 July 2017, Abu Dhabi Police announced on 2 July 2017. Heavy vehicles and taxi-plated vehicles are not allowed tint.

The RTA vehicle test inspects the driver's field of vision and the state of its glass. We choose a film shade within that limit for every car we tint.

Prevention

How car PPF fitting works at Royal Prince Auto Care

Our workshop takes car PPF fitting through 6 steps, paint first and glass last.

Inspect and record the paint

A wash first makes problem areas easy to see. We then photograph unsound paint: loose paint, dents, fillers, rust, blisters and areas where water collects.

Remove old film

We take old PPF off with steam, which keeps it pliable, and pull it back at less than 45 degrees. Pulled that low, the film carries its adhesive away and does not leave it on the paint.

Decontaminate the panels

We remove tar, tree sap, wax and old polish with the right solvent and a clay bar. Each panel then gets a wipe of 70 per cent isopropyl alcohol and 30 per cent water.

Fit and trim the film

Body panel seams move as the car flexes, so film laid across one pulls away. We cut the film at each seam between panels.

Keep sensors and cameras clear

Mercedes-Benz states that the radar sensors behind the bumpers and grille of an EU-edition E-Class W213 must not be covered. Covering the windscreen near its camera, with a sticker for instance, can impair Active Steering Assist on that model. We leave those areas clear of film on every car.

Tint the side and rear windows

We cut the film to size and fit it to the inner face of each side and rear pane.

Cost and value

What decides the cost of car PPF and tinting in Dubai?

Car PPF cost in Dubai turns on the panels covered, paint condition, old film to remove, film type and windows tinted. A full body takes more film and more labour than the bonnet, bumper and mirrors. Chipped or faded panels add refinishing or polishing before film.

The paint inspection tells us which factors your car brings. Book the inspection on WhatsApp and give the make and model.

Why Royal Prince

Why choose Royal Prince Auto Care for car paint protection film

Our film work rests on choices that suit Dubai heat and modern cars.

Film fitted indoors

Warm, windy air speeds up the evaporation of isopropyl alcohol. We prepare and fit paint protection film indoors, out of the wind and the sun.

Matt paint kept matt

For a matt-finish, EU-edition E-Class W213, Mercedes-Benz rules out polish, wax and car washes with a hot-wax finish. We never polish matt paint before film goes on.

Window film with no metal

One nano-multilayer window film contains no metal and does not interfere with mobile phones, GPS or satellite radio.

Shade matched to the factory glass

Safety glazing with under 70 per cent light transmittance carries a V in its marking. One film transmits 69 per cent of light over clear glass, against 58 per cent over tinted factory glass. We read the mark before choosing a shade.

Rear screen elements protected

Jaguar tells owners of the EURO-edition XK coupe to clean the inner rear screen with a damp cloth or chamois, never solvents or sharp objects. Those rules protect its heating and radio elements. We clean every rear screen with a soft damp cloth and no scraper before film goes on.

One workshop for paint and glass

We take paint protection film and window film work for every make our workshop services. Paint, film and glass work share one roof in DIP 2.

In Dubai conditions

How do you look after PPF and window tint in Dubai?

Looking after PPF and window tint in Dubai comes down to 6 owner habits. Of these, 3 protect the paint film: a wait before the first wash, hand washes and quick removal of droppings. The other 3 cover stains and new tint: stain removal kept off the paint, windows kept up after tinting and gentle glass cleaning.

We fit the film, and these habits keep its edges down and its surface clean.

A wait before the first wash

Leave a car with new clear PPF unwashed for 2 days, and one with coloured PPF for 3 days. Coloured PPF also stays out of automatic tunnel washes, which scratch and damage its finish.

Hand washes over machine washes

Jaguar's advice for the EURO-edition XF is to avoid automatic car washes, jet washes and power mops. Repeated automatic washes can dull the lustre of its paint.

Droppings and insects off at once

Mercedes-Benz tells owners of the EU-edition E-Class W213 to soak bird droppings with water and rinse them off. Insect remains take an insect remover, and all dirt comes off as soon as possible.

Stubborn stains lifted from the film

Stubborn stains on one PPF come off with isopropyl alcohol. Keep the alcohol on the film and off the paint around it.

Windows up after tinting

Keep newly tinted windows closed and uncleaned for 1 to 5 days, depending on the climate at fitting.

Gentle glass cleaning

Use a damp microfibre and a mild glass cleaner without ammonia on tinted glass. Scouring pads and other abrasive materials stay away from the film.

FAQs

Car PPF and Window Tinting questions, answered

Does car PPF damage the paint when it is removed?

No, on sound paint. Steam keeps old PPF pliable, and a slow pull below 45 degrees takes the adhesive off with the film. Repaired, coated or aged paint is the exception, since it can come away with a wrap film. We record those areas before any film goes on.

What is the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?

Research on ceramic coatings shows they cure as moisture in the air starts their hydrolysis. Once cured, it makes the paint hydrophobic and oleophobic and resists UV, acid rain, bird droppings and tree sap. Paint protection film is a physical layer of polyurethane that takes stone chips and scratches in place of the paint.

Why does new window tint look hazy?

Fresh window tint can look hazy or hold small moisture bubbles through its first 10 days on the glass. We refit a pane whose bubbles remain after that time.

What is the fine for illegal window tint in Dubai?

Exceeding the permitted tint percentage carries a 1,500-dirham federal fine under Ministry of Interior Ministerial Resolution 178 of 2017. Dubai adds impound under Decree 30 of 2023 for tint over the permissible limit. Dubai Police gave the release fee in July 2023 as 10,000 dirhams.
