A car needs AC repair when it shows 1 of 6 signs. Of these, 4 affect the cooling: warm air, fading at idle, cutting in and out, and weak airflow with a musty smell. The other 2 are water on the passenger floor and a hiss, click or grind.
Warm air at full cold means the evaporator behind the dashboard is not absorbing heat. The cause is low refrigerant from a leak, a blocked expansion valve, a failed compressor or an electrical fault. We read the system pressures first, because each cause gives a different reading, then repair the leak, valve, compressor or circuit it points to.
At idle, only the condenser fan moves air through the condenser at the front of the car. A weak fan or a clogged condenser lets the high-side pressure climb until the pressure switch stops the compressor to protect it. We read the high-side pressure at idle with the AC on, then replace a weak fan or clean or replace a clogged condenser.
Cooling that stops for a short spell and then returns points to an iced evaporator. An evaporator is designed to stay above 0.5 °C, and below that the water on its fins freezes and blocks the airflow. We test the expansion valve, the evaporator temperature sensor and the cabin filter, 3 parts that cause icing, and replace the faulty one.
Weak airflow starts at a clogged cabin air filter, an iced evaporator or a blower fault. A musty smell comes from microbial growth on the wet evaporator coil. We replace the cabin filter and clean the evaporator, and we replace a failed blower motor or resistor.
Water inside the car comes from the evaporator drain. The evaporator pulls moisture out of the cabin air.
Dubai's monthly mean relative humidity runs from 50% to 66%, so the drain carries water every time the AC runs. We clear or refit a blocked or loose drain hose so the water leaves under the car.
A hiss at switch-on or switch-off points to a refrigerant leak. A click as the AC engages comes from a worn compressor clutch. A hum, rattle or grind signals worn compressor bearings or low oil.
We trace the noise to the clutch, the bearings or the valves, then replace the clutch or the compressor and set its oil charge.

We replace a leaking high pressure hose or low pressure hose as a complete part. We replace the receiver-drier, also called the AC dryer, each time the circuit is opened, because its desiccant cannot be dried out and reused.
Car AC failure in Dubai comes from 6 causes, and summer heat adds load to every one. The condenser rejects cabin heat into air above 40 °C from June to August. Refrigerant pressure rises with that heat: R-134a condensing at 45 °C reaches 1,161 kPa absolute, and at 60 °C 1,683 kPa.
Dubai's mean daily maximum reaches 41.9 °C in August, and the Dubai International Airport station recorded 48.8 °C in August 2016. A weak fan or a slightly low charge shows up first in those months.
We read the pressures, the vent temperature and the switch and fan circuits together. A high reading at idle points us to condenser airflow, and low readings on both sides to a low charge.

No. A car AC gas refill restores cooling only until the leak empties the system again. A sealed AC circuit does not use up refrigerant, so a system that needs gas has a leak that also carries compressor oil out.
UV dye shows a leak only when the dye was in the system before the leak started. Extra dye added on each visit reduces the lubrication of the compressor oil and can make the control valves stick.

The refrigerant label under the bonnet names the gas a car uses, R-134a or R-1234yf, and its charge weight. R-1234yf has a global warming potential of 4, against 1,430 for R-134a. The label, not the model year, decides what goes into the system.
The 2 gases use different service ports, so one cannot be filled into the other's system. R-1234yf is mildly flammable and needs its own service equipment. We read the label before we connect any equipment, and recharge the same gas by weight.
Hybrid and electric cars add a high-voltage electric compressor, sealed with its motor inside and lubricated by insulating oil. Standard PAG oil in that compressor creates a risk of electric shock. We use the oil type the maker specifies on every compressor we fit.

We ask whether the AC turns warm at idle, in traffic or all the time, and we note any smell, noise or water. We read the refrigerant type and the charge weight from the label under the bonnet.
We measure the high-side and low-side pressures and the vent temperature with the engine running and the AC at full cold. When the compressor or the fan does not run, we test the clutch, the pressure switch and the fan circuit.
We locate the leak before any refrigerant goes in. We use an electronic detector, existing UV dye or forming gas, a test mix of nitrogen and hydrogen.
We recover the refrigerant with a recovery machine and never vent it to the air. We replace the failed part and the receiver-drier, and we flush the circuit after a compressor failure.
We hold the system under vacuum for at least 30 minutes to remove air and moisture. We then watch the gauge for 10 minutes to confirm the system is sealed. We recharge R-134a or R-1234yf by weight to the figure on the label.
We test the pressures, the vent temperature and the fan switching again, at idle and at 1,500 rpm.
