What are the signs of car engine overheating?
Car engine overheating shows 6 signs. A temperature warning, lost power with knocking and steam from the bonnet appear on the drive. Falling coolant, brown coolant and a high idle with poor starting show up earlier, at a level check or a cold start.
Lost power with pinging or knocking
Hyundai lists a loss of power and a loud pinging or knocking among the Tucson's overheating signs, next to a high temperature gauge. We repair the cooling fault behind the noise and any heat damage the engine has taken.
Steam from under the bonnet
Hyundai warns Tucson owners never to remove the coolant cap or the drain plug while the engine is hot. Hot coolant and steam can burst out under pressure and injure the person at the cap. Once the engine has cooled, we find why the coolant boiled and replace the part at fault.
Coolant that keeps dropping
Hyundai tells Tucson owners that coolant needing repeated top-ups calls for a cooling system check, and that a serious coolant loss means a leak. We locate where the coolant escapes and renew the hose, seal or part responsible.

The reason for engine overheating in Dubai is 1 of 6 faults, each one stopping the coolant from carrying enough heat out to the air. The coolant circuit holds 3 of them: low or wrong coolant, a jammed thermostat and a leaking cap. The other 3 are a fan that stops, a soiled or blocked radiator, and a failed water pump or belt.
- Low or wrong coolant: a low coolant level leads to overheating, and undiluted antifreeze does not carry away enough engine heat.
- A jammed thermostat: a thermostat stuck closed overheats the engine, and a faulty map-controlled thermostat can overheat it to the point of damage.
- A leaking cap: the system cannot build pressure, so vapour bubbles form in the coolant.
- A fan that stops: worn carbon brushes, a failed thermal or AC pressure switch, or battery undervoltage make the temperature climb in traffic jams.
- A soiled or blocked radiator: dirt and insects on the fins, or debris in the narrow tubes, cut the heat exchange.
- A failed water pump or belt: a loose or torn belt, or a loose or broken impeller, stops the pump from moving the coolant.
Afternoons in Dubai average 41.9 °C in August, taken as the mean daily maximum at the airport station. Pressurised at 1.0 to 1.5 bar, coolant reaches 115 °C to 130 °C before it boils, against 100 °C for open water. A cap or level fault takes that margin away.

Trapped air slows the coolant down and can overheat the engine to the point of severe damage. With the air drawn out, the coolant keeps its full flow.
A warm-up that works
A cold engine sends its coolant round a smaller bypass loop. A working thermostat closes that loop and opens the full circuit when the temperature rises sharply.

Corrosion from unsuitable or weak antifreeze is one cause of a jammed thermostat. Coolant at the correct strength protects the thermostat against that corrosion.

Record when the temperature climbs
We ask whether the gauge climbs in slow traffic or at motorway speed, and how much coolant goes in between top-ups. The engine speed and the outside temperature go on the job card too.
Check the coolant and the belt
On a cold engine, we look at the coolant level, its contamination and its antifreeze strength. The drive belt gets a tension check, and we reset a slack belt or fit a new one when it is worn.
Read the codes and test the sensor
We read the fault memory and check whether the displayed temperature is realistic. The coolant temperature sensor runs on a reference supply of about 5 V, and its resistance falls as it warms. We measure it against its maker's values and replace a sensor outside them.
Pressure-test the system and the cap
We pressurise the cooling system above 1 bar and watch the gauge for any fall. The cap gets its own opening pressure test, and a tracer dye marks leaks that stay hidden. A cap that fails is replaced.
Measure across the thermostat
We record the coolant temperature before and after the thermostat. A removed thermostat goes into a water bath to show whether it opens, and we replace one that does not.
Refill, bleed and road-test
The refill mixes the coolant with deionised water, while a vacuum filler draws out the air. We finish with a road test that repeats the conditions noted in step 1.

A car engine in Dubai stays clear of overheating with 4 habits. They are a weekly coolant level check, a hose check every 6 months, coolant changes at the maker's interval and a cooling check before summer. Each habit catches a low level, a weak hose or tired coolant while the engine is still healthy.
A weekly level check
The RTA asks Dubai drivers to make a simple vehicle check each week, with the engine coolant level on the list. Through the transparent wall of the expansion tank, the level reads against Min and Max marks.
Hoses every 6 months
Hyundai asks Tucson owners to check the radiator, heater and air conditioning hoses for leaks or damage at least every 6 months. We replace any cooling or heater hose that is swollen or worn.
Coolant at the maker's interval
Hyundai's first coolant change on the 2025 Tucson falls at 195,000 km or 120 months, and later changes follow each 30,000 km or 24 months. Kia's first change on a 2024 Kia coded MQ4 falls at 180,000 km or 120 months. We change coolant at the interval your car's maker sets.

What happens when an engine overheats?
Overheating hardens the head gasket material, and an engine that has been severely overheated needs a new head gasket. The heat also expands the aluminium pistons faster than their cylinders, which can seize the engine.
Is it safe to keep driving with an overheating engine?
No. Hyundai warns Tucson drivers against driving on with an overheated engine. Kia warns drivers of a 2024 Kia coded MQ4 that driving with no engine coolant can seize the engine. Stop, let the engine cool and book a cooling system check.
Does car engine overheating get worse in the Dubai summer?
Yes. In 2015 the UAE Civil Defense warned that high summer temperatures can overheat an engine until it catches fire. Over 1991 to 2020, the hottest day recorded at the airport station reached 48.8 °C, in August.
Can you top up an overheated engine with plain water?
