A gearbox in trouble gives the driver 6 signs. The first 3 show in the drive: a warning or limp mode, clutch slip, and a shudder. The other 3 are fluid under the car, a burnt smell and lost power on a hot climb. Each card gives our next step.
On the Mercedes-Benz 9G-TRONIC, the control unit switches to limp-home mode when it detects a critical fault. A 2025 Nissan Juke with a DCT lowers its speed in fail-safe and shows a "Gearbox Fault" message. We repair the sensor, wiring or connector fault behind the warning, and refer faults inside the gearbox to the car maker's dealer.
The engine speeds up but the car does not, and an odour or smoke can follow on the move. We test the clutch release hydraulics and replace a leaking master or slave cylinder. A worn clutch kit goes to the car maker's dealer for replacement.
Certain fluids, left to age in heat, can chemically change the friction lining of a converter lock-up clutch. In vehicle tests, that change brought shudder. We drain the aged fluid, renew the filter or the pan with its built-in filter, and refill with the grade the gearbox maker lists.
Gearbox fluid on the ground or on the underside of the car shows that a sealed circuit is losing oil. We check the pan seal, the cooler lines and the shaft seals, then replace the one that leaks and refill the gearbox to its level.
A burnt smell from the gearbox oil, or chips and metal pieces in it, means damage inside the transmission. We refer internal damage of this kind to the car maker's dealer for repair.
A 2025 Nissan Juke DCT protects itself when its fluid grows too hot, as on a steep grade in high heat with a heavy load. It then cuts engine power and, under certain conditions, road speed. We test the fluid temperature reading, the cooler and its lines, then repair the part that fails.

In the S tronic of an Audi Q2, fourth gear is already engaged in the second gearbox half while the car accelerates in third. A sound gearbox keeps that quick handover.
Once locked, the converter clutch of the 9G-TRONIC links the crankshaft and the drive shaft with little slip. Fresh fluid of the right grade protects that direct link.
A solenoid fault in a 9G-TRONIC disables its gear, and the gearbox stops selecting it. With the wiring or connector fault behind it repaired, the gearbox selects every gear again.
Gearbox oil has 3 tasks: cooling, guarding against contamination and passing on the control commands. Fresh oil of the listed grade does all 3.
In the 9G-TRONIC, a thermostat sends all the oil back to the gearbox below 70 °C and through the cooler above 90 °C. A clear cooler circuit lets that thermostat prevent overheating damage.
A car has 1 of 5 main gearbox types. They are the torque-converter automatic, the dual-clutch gearbox, the CVT, the hybrid power-split unit and the manual. The type decides the fluid, the level check and the tests, so the type is the first thing we identify.
The Mercedes-Benz 9G-TRONIC is a torque-converter automatic. Planetary gear sets give its 9 forward gears and 1 reverse, and multidisk clutches and brakes select each one.
A dual-clutch gearbox splits its gears between 2 clutches. The Porsche PDK puts the odd gears and reverse on clutch I, and the even gears on clutch II.
In the Audi Q2 range, the S tronic runs its 2 clutches dry. Engines of 320 Nm and above get an S tronic with its clutches in an oil bath.
A Nissan CVT has no steps: it changes the width of 2 pulleys, which moves a steel belt to a new running radius. Toyota's THS II hybrid system uses a power split device that divides engine power between producing electricity and driving the car.
A car needs a gearbox oil change service when its maker's schedule calls for one. Dubai heat, heavy traffic and towing bring that point forward. For its 2025 US4 model, Hyundai lists automatic transmission fluid as an inspection item in the Middle East, against no service in other markets.
Under severe use, Hyundai sets a change of that fluid every 90,000 km and counts stop-and-go driving as severe. Kia's 2024 SG2 has no DCT fluid service on its normal schedule, but a change every 120,000 km in heavy traffic.
We follow the schedule the car maker sets for each model, and bring the change forward for a car used in these conditions.

We note whether the fault comes cold or warm, in slow traffic or on a car park ramp, and in which gear. We also note any message on the dashboard.
A P0700 code in the engine unit means the transmission control module has logged a fault and asked for the warning lamp. We read the gearbox unit itself for the code behind it.
We bring the fluid to the temperature its maker sets for the check, then set the level. Mercedes-Benz checks the 9G-TRONIC level by the overflow method.
The magnet in a gearbox pan reveals the abrasion in the oil. The 9G-TRONIC pan holds 2 such magnets for metal wear debris. We read the fluid and the magnets before choosing the repair.
We check the area around the clutch for leaks and release faults first, because stripping the clutch straight away is a common error. With the parking brake on, we try to pull away in third gear; an engine that does not stall marks a slipping clutch.
We repair the fault the tests confirmed, then drive the car again in the conditions noted in the first step.

Fluid volume varies by gearbox: the 725.011 version of the 9G-TRONIC takes about 10 litres of GTL fluid. A metal-pan gearbox gets a new filter and sealing ring at each change; a plastic pan with a built-in filter is changed whole.

With the transmission drained of oil, neither start the engine nor tow the car. Move it on a transporter instead.
