What are the signs that car seats need upholstery repair?
Car seats need upholstery repair at the first of 6 signs. Patchy colour, cracks, rubbed patches and stains are the 4 you see on the trim. The other 2 are a seat that slips on its rails and an airbag warning light that appears after seat work.
Cracks across the leather
Cracks that open across the seat base or the backrest go deeper than the top coat. We cut out the cracked panel and stitch a new leather panel into the original seams.
Dull, rubbed patches
A dull, rough patch on the seat base shows that the surface has worn through its finish. We repair the patch or renew the panel in leather or fabric to match the seat.
Stains and colour transfer
Marks from drinks, sun cream or dyed clothing sit in the surface of the trim. We clean the stain first, and renew the panel when cleaning leaves a mark.
Seat channels and rails that slip
A seat that slides, rocks or grinds on its channels and rails after it is locked has a worn rail or lock part. We repair or replace the rail or lock part at fault.
Airbag warning light after seat work
Kia treats an airbag lamp that refuses to go out, or lights up on the move, as an SRS fault on the 2021 Sorento (MQ4). We read the stored code and refer the SRS repair to the maker's dealer.

Car upholstery wear in Dubai has 6 causes. Heat and UV light, direct sun and water lead the list, then cosmetics, dyed clothing and swings in temperature and humidity. Heat and light age the material, while water, chemicals and dye attack the surface and temperature swings stretch and shrink leather.
- Heat and UV light: 1989 research on Japanese-market cars names these 2 as the chief factors in cabin material ageing.
- Direct sun: that 1989 research in Japan rated how far seats exposed to direct sunlight lost their colour.
- Water: Kia warns that wetting a leather seat on the 2021 Sorento can change the nature of natural leather.
- Cosmetics and chemicals: on a 2021 Sorento, air freshener, sun cream, perfume, cosmetic oil and hand cleaner can damage or discolour the trim.
- Dyed clothing: jeans and clothes that release dye can contaminate the surface of the 2021 Sorento's seat covering.
- Temperature and humidity: Kia calls wrinkles in the 2021 Sorento's leather a natural result of stretching and shrinking with both.

Kia warns that an accessory seat cover on a 2021 Sorento can reduce or prevent the effect of the side airbag. We fit no accessory cover to a seat with a side airbag.
Leather made for cabin heat
Research tests automotive leather at 70 to 120 °C, with light and humidity, to judge how its finish holds and keeps its colour. Leather for car interiors needs a higher light fastness, and we fit leather made for that use.
Fabric that keeps its fire resistance
On the 2021 Sorento, Kia warns that poor upkeep or the wrong cleaner can reduce the fire resistance of the seat fabric. Our fabric and carpet cleaning uses a mild soap solution meant for upholstery or carpets.
A driver's seat ready for the RTA test
Driver's seat mounting and the safety belts both sit on the RTA list of light vehicle test items. Every seat we remove goes back on its own mounting bolts, with its belt anchor in place.
Belts that hold in a crash
On the 2021 Sorento, Kia notes that damaged webbing or a damaged buckle is not as strong. Such a belt can fail in a collision or a sudden stop. We inspect each belt and buckle while its seat is out, and a damaged one goes to the maker's dealer for a new assembly.
Leather that keeps its colour
Kia names neutral detergents or low-alcohol solutions for the leather of the 2021 Sorento. High-alcohol, acid or alkaline cleaners can fade the colour or strip the surface. We clean leather with a neutral cleaner.

Can fabric car seats be converted to leather?
Yes. A fabric seat with no side airbag, heater, ventilation or passenger sensor can take a full leather cover in place of its fabric. On a heated or ventilated 2021 Sorento seat, Kia warns that a changed cover can damage the warmer or the ventilation.
We convert seats that carry none of these parts, and the maker's cover stays on the seats that do. The door panels can take matching leather inserts.

How does seat work affect the passenger airbag sensor?
A Mazda CX-5 with a front passenger occupant classification sensor carries it in the seat cushion, where it reads electrostatic capacity. A seat cover, a washed seat or a spilled liquid stops the sensor detecting the passenger correctly. The front and side airbags and the pretensioner can then fail to deploy, or deploy by accident.
An extra electrical device on the seat surface, such as a seat warmer, upsets the reading in the same way. On the CX-5, a flashing airbag light with the OFF indicator lit marks a sensor fault.
We fit no cover, pad or heater to a front passenger seat with this sensor, and we keep its cushion dry. A sensor fault goes to the maker's dealer.

Check the seat for airbags, heating and ventilation
We check each seat for a side airbag, a far-side airbag, a heater, ventilation and a passenger sensor before any trim comes off. These parts decide what the seat can take.
Refer SRS seats to the maker's dealer
A seat with a side airbag, pretensioner or occupant sensor carries SRS connectors. We refer its removal to the maker's dealer.
Remove the seat with cut-resistant gloves
Tesla warns that the edges of the Model Y seat base are sharp enough to cause injury. We wear cut-resistant gloves when we lift any seat out.
Repair or renew the cover
We repair the worn panel or fit a new leather or fabric cover on a seat with no side airbag. Each new panel is cut to the shape of the seat it covers.
Refit the seat and test the rail lock
We bolt each seat with no SRS parts back to its mounting. Kia sets the lock check for the 2021 Sorento: a seat that moves forward or back without the lever is not locked.
Check the warning lights at start-up
On the 2021 Sorento, the airbag light shows for about 6 seconds at ignition, then goes out. We switch on the ignition after every seat refit, and a light that stays on goes to the maker's dealer.

Kia advises vacuuming the seats of the 2021 Sorento to remove dust and sand, which prevents abrasion of the leather. The Dubai International Airport normals count 17.7 days of rising sand in an average annual cycle.
No wet cloth on leather
Kia warns that wiping the leather of the 2021 Sorento with a wet cloth can crack its surface. We clean leather seats without soaking them.

Do seat belts need replacing after an accident?
Yes. After an accident, Kia wants each in-use seat belt assembly of a 2021 Sorento renewed, whether or not damage shows. On a Model Y, a fired pretensioner locks its belt, and Tesla requires a new belt. We send the car to the maker's dealer, which fits the new assemblies.
Is a seat belt comfort clip safe to use?
No. On a 2021 Sorento, Kia rules out any accessory on the seat belts. A gadget sold to make a belt more comfortable or to move it on the body can cut the protection it gives. Kia adds that it can raise the risk of serious harm in a collision.
Are there seat belt recalls on cars in the UAE?
Yes. An August 2022 recall in the UAE covers 109 Land Rover cars of the 2022 and 2023 models. They are the Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar. A damaged front pretensioner tube can reduce or remove pre-tensioning in a crash. The fix covers a tube inspection and a new retractor when damage shows.
