A faulty fuel injector shows 6 signs. The driver notices misfiring with the warning light, a rough idle, hard starting, higher fuel use, low power or a fuel smell. Each sign comes from an injector that leaks, clogs, wears or fails electrically, or from a fault elsewhere in the fuel system.
An engine runs on the right ratio of fuel to air. An injector that sprays too much or too little upsets that ratio in its cylinder.
The cylinder misfires and the ECU lights the warning lamp. We test the injector on the misfiring cylinder and replace an injector that fails that test.
A Jeep Renegade, Compass or Commander with the 1.3 MultiAir engine and a leaking injector shows an unstable idle and abnormal engine noise. We confirm the leak, then replace the injectors that the fix for that engine covers.
A leaking diesel injector stops the engine from starting or makes it crank for a long time before it fires. Limp-home mode, a protective mode the engine control unit enters on a fault, is an early sign of a failing injector. We find the leaking injector and replace it.

A new diesel injector without its code entered in the ECU gives poor running and idling and sets fault codes. A coded injector lets the engine idle evenly as soon as it starts.
Jeep warns that driving a Wrangler on with a severe engine fault can overheat the catalytic converter and damage it and the car. A sound injector set takes that heat load away from the converter.
Kia warns that a fuel jet from a leak in the injection system of a general-region diesel NQ5 Sportage can cause serious injury. Correctly seated injector seals keep that fuel inside the rail and the lines.

Exhaust emissions are one item of the RTA periodic test, and a pass is required to renew registration. Injectors that meter fuel correctly send the car to that test with its fuel faults repaired.

Cleaning suits a fuel injector that is sound but fouled, and replacement suits one that leaks, has an electrical fault or has worn. In a direct-injection engine test, a deposit in the tip counterbore cut injector flow by 2.21 per cent at 150 bar. HC and particulate emissions rose with it.
In a second test, removing the tip deposits from mildly fouled injectors cut particulate emissions by up to about 45 per cent. NOx rose by about 12 per cent in the same test.

We ask whether the fault appears at a cold start, at idle, under load or as a fuel smell. We read the fault memory and the short-term and long-term fuel trims, which shift when an injector meters the wrong amount.
We fit a gauge, run the pump and compare the fuel pressure with the maker's figure. Each injector's resistance is compared with the vehicle's technical data, and one outside the range is replaced. On a diesel, we test the fuel for contamination.
On a diesel, we test the backleakage of every injector on a sealed rail and confirm the rail pressure. FCA's leak check on the Jeep 1.3 MultiAir is an endoscope view through the spark plug holes, 1 minute per injector with the ignition on. The injector that fails is replaced.
Kia forbids work on the injection system of a general-region diesel NQ5 Sportage with the engine running or within 30 seconds of switch-off. The pump, rail, injectors and pipes stay under high pressure after the engine stops. We follow that rule on every high-pressure system we open.
On a direct injector, we fit a new decoupling element and remove and refit the PTFE combustion chamber ring, the O-ring and the support washer. The injector and its fuel lines go back to the maker's torque figures.
We write each new diesel injector's trim code to the engine ECU, and code a direct injector where the engine calls for it. We then clear the fault codes and read them again with the engine running.

A UAE recall covers Mercedes-Benz C 205, E 213 and G 463 petrol models of 2019 to 2020. On those cars, a particle in the fuel rail can cause a leak between rail and injector. Mercedes-Benz replaces the fuel rail and the injectors.

Stalling or a no-start can point to injector timing, but the fault can also sit elsewhere on the car. We test the injector before we condemn it, and repair the fault where we find it.
A restricted fuel filter on a petrol Hyundai Tucson NX4 causes surging, power loss and hard starting, 3 signs that look like an injector fault. We check the filter and replace a restricted one.
GM has seen the wrong injector fitted to a cylinder of its V6 and V8 petrol engines. The wrong part skews the fuel trims and gives a rough idle. We order each injector by the parts catalogue for that engine and cylinder.
FCA allows the O-rings of a 6.4 litre SRT Hemi injector to go back in when they show no cuts, tears or deformation. We inspect each reused seal against the maker's rule and replace a damaged one.
Common rail systems work to fine tolerances, and injector refits are done in clean conditions from start to finish. We cap the open ports and keep dirt out of the rail and the lines.

For the Wrangler, Jeep recommends unleaded petrol of the right octane that carries detergent, corrosion and stability additives.
Jeep warns Wrangler owners against indiscriminate fuel system cleaners, because their active solvents can harm fuel system gaskets and diaphragms.
Hyundai lists one bottle of its fuel additive every 10,000 km or 12 months for the Tucson NX4 G2.5 GDi and G1.6 T-GDi. That schedule applies where fuel meeting EN228 is not available. Hyundai also says not to mix other additives.
Hyundai's schedule replaces the Tucson NX4 D2.0 fuel filter every 30,000 km on EN590 diesel and every 15,000 km on other diesel. We replace the fuel filter at the interval your car's schedule sets for the fuel it uses.

Yes. Each diesel common rail injector carries its own trim code, because no 2 injectors are exactly alike. The ECU uses the code to compensate for the differences. Direct petrol injectors are coded where the engine calls for it.

P0200 flags a fault on more than 1 injector, and P0201 to P0208 flag a problem with a specific injector. P0300 is a misfire across more than 1 cylinder. A leaking Jeep 1.3 MultiAir injector also sets P0087 for low rail pressure, and a worn diesel injector sets a drift code such as P0263.
