Warning signs

What are the symptoms of a bad differential?

A bad differential shows 4 symptoms that a driver can spot. The first 2 show on the car itself: oil on the axle housing and a new noise or vibration from the axle. The other 2 follow a drive: water over the axle and a wheel that spun hard while the other stood still.

Oil on the axle housing

Wet oil on the axle housing, around its plugs or at the pinion seal shows that the sealed axle is losing oil. We replace the leaking pinion or axle seal and refit any missing plug.

A new noise or vibration from the axle

An unusual noise or vibration from the axle is the first thing to pin down when a differential fails. We pass gear or bearing damage inside the axle to the car maker's dealer, where the rebuild takes place.

An axle that has been under water

Kia calls for a differential oil change on the model coded MQ4 any time the axle has been submerged. We change the differential oil on a car that has driven through water deep enough to cover the axle.

One wheel spinning, the other still

Spinout is one wheel spinning hard while the other wheel stands still. The spin makes heat that breaks down the oil film on the differential gears. We renew the oil after a hard spin of this kind.

What it covers

What our car differential service in Dubai covers

Our car differential service in Dubai covers the axle, its seals, its oil and its electronic controls:

  • Axle check for leaks, cracks and missing plugs
  • Pinion seal and axle seal replacement
  • Oil drain and condition check
  • Oil change after the axle has been under water
  • Refill with the oil class the maker lists
  • Limited-slip and locking differential oil service
  • Fault code reading on electronic differentials
  • Tyre size check on all-wheel-drive cars
  • Road test before and after each job

The work covers the parts outside the gear set: seals, plugs, oil and electronic controls. We repair the transfer case and the driveshafts under their own services.

What we see

What can cause a differential to fail in Dubai?

A differential fails from 6 causes, and 3 of them start with the oil: the wrong type, contamination and a low level. The other 3 are hardened seals, shock loads on the gear teeth and a stuck car forced out of sand. Dubai heat adds to the seal and oil causes.

  • The wrong oil: a lubricant of the wrong type or viscosity shortens the life of the bearings, gears and bushings.
  • Water and debris: water, foreign material and wear particles in the oil etch the gear and bearing surfaces.
  • Low or no oil: friction overheats the parts and breaks down the protective oil film.
  • Hardened seals: oil that soaks into the seal rubber stiffens the lip, which then cannot follow the shaft and leaks.
  • Shock loads: spinning wheels that grab on a firm surface overstress the gear teeth beyond the strength of the material.
  • Forced sand recovery: Kia lists differential damage as a risk of forcing the model coded MQ4 out of sand or mud.

The 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Dubai International Airport put the highest daily maximum at 48.8 °C, reached in August. In Sharjah, uncoated pavement heats to 60 °C in summer. A 15 °C rise in temperature can cut a seal rubber's heat-resistance index by about 3 times.

We match the damage to its cause in each car differential repair in Dubai, then correct the oil or the seal behind it.

In Dubai conditions

Car differential repair in Dubai: what the car gains

We fix each fault at its cause, so a correct car differential repair in Dubai gives the car these results.

Seals that stay supple

Thermally stable gear oil slows the carbonisation that hardens a differential seal until it leaks. A supple seal keeps the oil inside the axle.

Gears protected under load

GL-5 gear oil is made for hypoid gears in axles that run under shock loads at speed and under high torque at low speed. The right class keeps that protection in place.

Limited-slip grip as designed

The axle maker sets the friction requirements of a limited-slip differential, beyond the GL-5 class. Oil that meets them lets the unit grip the way it was built to.

Torque to the outside wheel

On Audi cars with the sport differential, first fitted to the S4 Sedan, most torque goes to the outside wheel in a curve. The difference between the 2 rear wheels reaches 1,800 Nm.

A rear lock ready off road

Toyota gives the Land Cruiser 250 an electric rear differential lock for off-road driving on rough roads. A sound rear axle lets that lock do its work.

A dry axle at the RTA test

Dubai's RTA inspects the axles visually in its periodic test of light vehicles. A sealed axle with no oil on its housing goes into that check dry.

In depth

Which type of differential does your car have?

A car's differential is 1 of 4 types: non-locking, limited-slip, locking or active. The type decides the oil, because a limited-slip or locking unit has friction or lubricant needs of its own. The car's specification names the type, and we read it to choose the oil.

Kia lists GL-5 hypoid gear oil of SAE 75W/85 for the rear differential of the model coded MQ4. The fill is 0.53 to 0.63 litres.

Land Rover specifies one oil for the non-locking rear differential of the Range Rover L405 and another for the electronic locking unit. Toyota's Land Cruiser 250 uses a limited-slip centre differential, and the Middle East Nissan Patrol has rear differential locking.

An active differential adds a clutch to the axle. Audi's sport differential places a superposition gear on each side of a conventional rear differential. A multi-plate clutch in an oil bath, worked by an electrohydraulic actuator, links the 2.

How it works

How we fix a bad differential at Royal Prince Auto Care

Our differential work runs in this order.

Ask when the noise or vibration starts

We ask whether the noise comes on under power, when coasting or in corners, and whether a tyre was changed. We then drive the car to reproduce it, so the last road test can prove it has gone.

Inspect the axle on the lift

Up on the lift, the axle gets a check for oil at its plugs and seals, cracks in the housing and missing plugs. We also compare the tyre sizes and replace an odd tyre so that the set matches.

Drain and examine the oil

We drain the oil and check its quantity, its condition and whether it meets the maker's specification. Water, metal particles or the wrong grade each point to a cause on the list above, and we correct that cause before the refill.

Read the codes of an electronic differential

On electronic locking and active differentials, we read the fault codes, then fix the faulty wiring or connector they lead to.

Refill with the listed oil

We refill each axle with the oil class and viscosity its maker lists for that unit, open, limited-slip or locking.

Road test the repair

A second drive under power, coasting and in corners confirms that the noise, the vibration or the leak has gone.

Call us to book a differential check, and say when the noise begins.

Cost and value

What decides the rear differential service cost in Dubai?

The rear differential service cost in Dubai is decided by 4 factors: the fault found, the differential type, the driven axles and the oil. A seal and oil job stays outside the gear set, while gear or bearing damage means work inside it.

We read which factors apply to the car from our lift and oil checks. Send its make and model by WhatsApp to arrange the inspection.

Why Royal Prince

Why choose Royal Prince Auto Care for car differential repair in Dubai

These practices shape every differential job at our workshop.

The cause before the part

A new part fitted without finding the cause of a failure brings no benefit. We trace the cause first, then replace the part and correct what damaged it.

No sand in the axle

We clean around the filler and drain plugs before we open them. Dirt and grit at an open plug otherwise fall into the axle, a risk that grows in dusty and sandy areas.

No GL-3 oil in a hypoid axle

GL-3 gear oil is not made for axles with hypoid gears. That class never goes into a hypoid axle at our workshop.

A separate fill for each unit

On a Range Rover L405, the rear differential takes 0.82 litres in non-locking form, or 1.21 litres when it locks electronically. The front differential takes 0.51 litres and the transfer box 1.5 litres. We measure the fill for each of those units on its own.

AWD cars kept still on the lift

Kia warns never to start the engine or turn the tyres of the full-time AWD model coded MQ4 while it is raised on a jack. Our technicians leave the engine off whenever an all-wheel-drive car sits on the lift.

Differential maintenance on every make

Rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive cars of every make come to our DIP 2 workshop. Their differentials get the same oil, seal and code work.

In Dubai conditions

How do you make a differential last longer in Dubai?

A differential in Dubai stays healthy longer through 4 habits. Off-road modes stay off tarmac, sand recovery stays gentle, AWD tyres match and the underbody gets a wash after sand. Rising sand blows across Dubai International Airport on an average of 17.7 days annually.

Off-road modes kept off tarmac

Kia states that TERRAIN mode, used on normal roads, can damage the AWD drive of the model coded MQ4 and bring vibration or noise. Switch back to DRIVE mode on tarmac.

A stuck car rocked, not forced

For the model coded MQ4 stuck in sand, Kia advises rocking it forwards and backwards, or wedging a stone or tree branch beneath the tyre. Avoid holding the engine at high rpm while a wheel spins.

4 matched tyres

Because the model coded MQ4 drives through all 4 wheels, Kia ties its handling to the state of the tyres. Its replacement tyres match in brand, size, type, tread and load capacity, and swap front to rear every 10,000 km.

An underbody wash after sand

After off-road use, Kia wants the underbody of the model coded MQ4 washed thoroughly. Sand, mud or water also shorten its maintenance interval. We bring the differential oil service forward for cars driven in sand.

FAQs

Car Differential Repair questions, answered

When does differential oil need changing in Dubai?

Kia schedules a rear differential oil inspection on the model coded MQ4 at 48 months or 60,000 km, then 96 months or 120,000 km. In heavy dust, its except-Europe schedule replaces the oil every 120,000 km. Hyundai sets the same figures for sand or dust on the model coded US4.

Can a bad differential be rebuilt?

Yes. A rebuild replaces the worn gears or bearings along with the thrust washers, seals and bushings. The fitter then sets the bearing preload, shaft end play and tooth contact pattern. A reused ring and pinion set goes back at its recorded backlash. We refer differential rebuilds to the car maker's dealer.

Can an all-wheel-drive car with a differential fault be towed on its wheels?

No. Kia states that the AWD model coded MQ4 is never towed with its wheels on the ground. Wheel dollies or a flatbed carry it instead. A Range Rover L405 whose rear electronic differential has failed in the locked position is not towed on 4 wheels at all.

Does car differential repair in Dubai include the transfer case?

No. The transfer case is a separate unit with its own oil, and Kia lists the 2 oils as separate items for the model coded MQ4. We repair it under our car transfer case repair service.

Can you keep driving with a leaking differential?

No. A leak lowers the oil level, and low oil causes friction, overheating and a breakdown of the protective oil film. Book a leak check as soon as oil shows on the axle housing.
