What are the signs of sunroof problems in a car?
Sunroof problems in a car show 6 signs. Water drips from the headliner, soaks the carpets or comes in as the roof opens. The front pillars gurgle with the fan on, the glass makes a noise as it moves, or the roof does not move.
Wet carpets under a panoramic roof
On an Audi Q5 or SQ5 with a panoramic sunroof, soaked carpets point to blocked drain hoses in the sunroof frame. Audi has found that these hoses can kink when the headliner is fitted. We replace a kinked hose and clear a blocked one.
A gurgle from the front pillars
A BMW X5 (F15) or X5 M (F85) can gurgle from its front sunroof drain tubes. The noise comes with the windows and doors shut, the blower at full speed or the AC on fresh air.
BMW traces it to a drain hose that has moved out of position and holds water before the A-pillar. We refit the hose into the body and secure it with adhesive.
Water through the open roof
On a Volvo S60 built from 2010 to 2018, water that enters as the sunroof opens can come from dirt deposits round the wind deflector. We clean the deflector area and the frame beside it.
A noise as the glass moves
On the Kia model coded MQ4, dust that builds up between the sunroof and the roof panel makes a noise as the glass moves. We clean the rails and the gap round the glass, then grease the rails.
A roof that does not move
A sunroof that does not move when the switch is pressed can have something trapped in its path. Mitsubishi's advice for the Pajero Sport is to release the switch and check for a trapped object. We remove what is caught and release the glass.

- Weight on the roof: Mitsubishi warns against sitting or placing heavy luggage on the sunroof or the edge of its opening.

Closing that stops for a hand
On a Land Rover Freelander 2, anti-trap protection stops the sunroof when it detects an obstruction or resistance. Under the UN regulation for interior fittings, a powered sliding roof reverses before its pinch force passes 100 N. The rule covers an opening of 200 mm to 4 mm.
Shade under the glass

Why does a sunroof stop working after a battery change?
A sunroof can stop working correctly after a battery change until it is reset. The 2025 Hyundai Tucson and the Kia model coded MQ4 can need a reset in 3 cases. They are a disconnected or discharged 12 V battery, a new sunroof fuse, and failed one-touch operation.
The Tucson sequence runs with the engine on and the car in P. The glass and the power sunshade close fully, and the switch is then held forward until both slide open and close again.
A Land Rover Discovery 4 needs recalibration when its power is cut while the roof is part open. Its switch is held for 20 seconds and through a full cycle. A Mitsubishi Pajero Sport takes a hold of at least 3 seconds.
We run the maker's reset after battery or fuse work on a car with a sunroof. A roof that still fails after the reset goes on to our switch, fuse and motor tests.

We tilt and slide the glass and run the power sunshade, listening for noise and watching for stops. Water marks in the headliner and the pillars show us where to look first.
Water test each drain
With the roof fully open, we pour water slowly into each front corner of the frame where the drain hoses connect. A tube that holds the water back shows itself at this step.
Clear or replace the drain tubes
We apply compressed air with care to clear a blocked tube. A kinked tube, or a blockage that does not clear, gets a new tube.
Inspect and renew the weatherstrip
We check the rubber weatherstrip round the opening for gaps where water passes. One that no longer seals is replaced.
Test the switch, fuse and motor
A roof that does not move gets a test of its switch, its fuse and its motor circuit. We then fit a new part in place of the failed one.
Test the automatic reversal
A test object, never a hand, goes into the closing path of the glass and the sunshade. We confirm that both reverse on contact.

Sunroof care after a wash or rain
Mitsubishi asks Pajero Sport drivers to wipe the water off the glass before they open the roof. On its model coded MQ4, Kia advises against opening the glass straight after rain or a wash, because the water can wet the interior.
A closed roof when parked
Mitsubishi also asks those drivers to close the sunroof completely when the car is washed or left parked.
Rails wiped clean
For the model coded MQ4, Kia advises opening the roof and wiping the dust off the rails with a clean cloth. We clear the drain tubes, which an owner cannot reach.

Why is my sunroof leaking when the glass is closed?
A closed sunroof leaks when the water that gathers in its frame cannot drain away. A kinked or restricted drain tube makes that water overflow into the headliner and the cabin. We clear or replace the tube at fault.
Does a car sunroof have pinch protection?
Yes. Makers name its limits for their own models. On a Land Rover Freelander 2, anti-trap protection does not work when the sunroof closes from the tilted position. On the Kia model coded MQ4, the automatic reversal can miss a thin or soft object caught at the glass.
What does the sunroof open warning mean?
