What are the signs that a car light bulb needs replacing?
A car light bulb needs replacing at 1 of 6 signs: a dark lamp, a fast indicator, a dim headlamp or a dark xenon lamp. The other 2 are a bulb warning in the cluster and a stop lamp that stays dark. Each sign below names its cause and our fix.
An indicator that flashes fast
Mitsubishi notes for the Pajero Sport that an unusually fast flash can mean a burnt-out turn-signal bulb. We find the dark indicator on that side and fit a new bulb.
A headlamp dimmer than the other
The light output of a bulb can fade with age while the bulb looks sound. Every light source loses intensity over time, and a halogen bulb fades 20 times faster than an LED. We fit new headlamp bulbs to bring back the full output.
A xenon lamp that stays dark
A xenon ballast has a counting circuit that ignites a faulty bulb 7 times and then stops. A dark xenon lamp can also come from the ballast or its supply. We replace the bulb or the ballast that our xenon test identifies.

What causes car light bulbs to fail in Dubai?
Car light bulbs in Dubai fail for 6 reasons: age, wet cables, damaged glass, corroded holders, the wrong bulb and xenon ballast faults. Wet cables and corroded holders both start with humidity.
- Age: light sources age in service, and a bulb used in poor conditions fails before its time.
- Wet cables: humidity creeps along the cable between the copper strands and the sheath until it reaches the lamp.
- Damaged glass: fine cracks or clouding of the glass capsule can make a bulb malfunction.
- Corroded holders: damp air eats into bulb holders, plug contacts and crimp joints inside the lamp.
- The wrong bulb: in a 2024 Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi states a different bulb can malfunction, stay dark or cause a vehicle fire.
- Xenon ballast faults: the ballast fails when it loses its voltage supply or ground, or when its own electronics fail or short internally.
Dubai's relative humidity averages 59 per cent and peaks at 65 per cent in January and February. That moist air is the source of the corrosion inside a lamp housing.

We change bulbs so that each lamp does the job its maker designed it for.
An even beam on both sides
A single new headlamp bulb next to an old one can leave an unbalanced beam. A new pair gives a brighter, balanced view of the road and lets you see further.
A filament where the reflector expects it
The standard aims for every H7 bulb made to it to fit every headlamp built for an H7. The permitted tolerance on its filament position is 0.2 mm, measured from the adjusting ring that seats the bulb.
Full reach without glare
A filament set too far from the reflector gives a beam that is too short. Set too close, it creates glare for oncoming drivers. A correctly made bulb avoids both faults.
A reflector that stays bright
Mitsubishi explains for the Pajero Sport that skin oil on bulb glass evaporates when the bulb heats up. The vapour then condenses on the reflector and dims its surface.
Light output to the standard
The UN filament lamp regulation sets the light output of each bulb type. A 12 V H7 bulb emits 1,500 lumen, within 10 per cent either way.
A headlamp safe from heat damage
Poorly made copies of branded bulbs can build up heat from a bad electrical design, poor welds or faulty wiring. One fake xenon bulb melted its base and socket and damaged the car's connector.

Which bulb types does a car use: halogen, xenon or LED?
A car's headlamps use halogen bulbs, xenon lamps or LEDs, and each takes a different light source. A halogen bulb has a filament in a glass capsule filled with halogen gas. A xenon lamp lights ionised xenon gas through a ballast and gives an intense, wide light distribution.
Standard xenon lamps reach a colour temperature of up to 4,500 K, against about 3,200 K for halogen. The LED headlamps of the 2024 Pajero Sport use LEDs in place of bulbs, and Mitsubishi sends their repair to its dealers.

Test each exterior lamp
We switch through the headlamps, fog lamps, indicators, hazards, stop, reversing and plate lamps one by one. Any other dark lamp joins the job at this point.
Match the bulb to the maker's specification
For the Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi specifies a replacement bulb that matches the old one in type, wattage and colour. We apply that match to every lamp, using the car maker's figures.
Let the lamp cool
A bulb is hot right after switch-off, and a xenon lamp unit runs at a high temperature. A high-output halogen bulb filled at up to 15 bar cold reaches up to 3 times that pressure when lit. We open the lamp once it has cooled.
Fit the bulb with clean gloves
We wear clean gloves to fit each halogen bulb.
Replace headlamp bulbs as a pair
An old headlamp bulb deteriorates fast and can fail soon after the first one blows. We replace the bulbs on both sides together.
Refit the covers and seals
We refit the lamp's rear cover and seal as they came off, with no sealant or adhesive.

Car Light Bulb Replacement questions, answered
Does car light bulb replacement in Dubai include the fog lamps?
Yes. We replace front and rear fog lamp bulbs. Under the UN lighting regulation, a front fog lamp shows white or selective yellow light and a rear fog lamp shows red.
Does a new xenon bulb mean a new ballast too?
No. The ballast is at fault when the xenon bulb, the supply of at least 9 V and the ground connection all test good. A failed bulb with a working ballast takes a new bulb and nothing more.
Can adjusting the headlamp fix the beam of a badly made bulb?
No. A badly made bulb with its filament out of position deforms the beam until its asymmetric pattern disappears. Adjusting the headlamp cannot correct that. In one comparison, the beam reached more than 50 m less far at the edge of the road. A correctly made bulb is the fix.
Why does a new bulb fail soon after fitting?
An early failure is a bulb that blows soon after fitting because of a production fault, not wear. A corroded holder, moisture in the cable or a bulb of the wrong type also shortens the life of a new bulb. We check the holder and the bulb type when a new bulb fails early, then replace the faulty part.
