Warning signs

What are the signs of a failing windscreen wiper motor?

A failing windscreen wiper motor shows 6 signs. The front motor gives 4: slow or dead wipers, stops mid-sweep, noise at the windscreen base and blades off their rest position. The rain sensor and the rear motor give the other 2: auto wipers that ignore rain and a rear wiper that runs non-stop.

Slow or dead wipers

Wipers that crawl across the glass or do not move at all are a sign of a failing motor. A blown fuse or a broken earth stops them in the same way. We replace the motor once the circuit feeding it tests sound.

Wipers that stop mid-sweep

On a 2024 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, wipers blocked partway through a sweep stop for a spell to keep the motor from overheating. They restart once the motor cools. We clear the blade and the linkage, and we fit a new motor when the stops continue on a clear screen.

Noise from the base of the windscreen

Unusual noise from the wiper area during a sweep is a sign of a failing wiper motor. We lift off the arms and the cover to find the source, then replace the worn linkage or the motor.

Blades that halt away from their rest position

Switched off, the motor keeps running until it reaches its park position at the base of the screen. Blades left standing on the glass mean the motor no longer finds that position. We check the park function and fit a new motor when it fails.

Auto wipers that ignore the rain

Mitsubishi names 2 signs of a faulty rain sensor on the 2024 Pajero Sport. The wipers keep a fixed interval whatever the rain, or stay still in rain. We spray water over the sensor to test it.

When the manual speeds work and the automatic setting stays silent, we test further with a diagnostic unit and replace the faulty sensor.

A rear wiper that runs non-stop

On a VW T5 Transporter with double-wing rear doors, a faulty rear wiper motor can keep the rear wipers running. They can also ignore the column switch, and the control unit does not necessarily store a fault code. We replace the faulty rear motor.

What it covers

What our windscreen wiper motor replacement includes

Our wiper motor work covers the circuit, the motor and the linkage:

  • Wiper fuse and interval relay check
  • Fault code reading on module-controlled wipers
  • Supply and earth tests at the motor plug
  • Front wiper motor replacement
  • Rear wiper motor replacement
  • Wiper linkage and ball joint replacement
  • Earth cable and wiring repair
  • Park position reset after refitting
  • Rain sensor test on automatic wipers

Each wiper circuit has its own fuse size. Our fuse check reads each size against the fuse table for that car.

What we see

What causes windscreen wiper motor failure in Dubai?

Windscreen wiper motor failure in Dubai comes from 6 causes: overload, water, corroded earths, control unit errors, a lost park setting and dry, dusty glass. Overload and a corroded earth both cut the current before it reaches a sound motor, so the motor is the last part we condemn.

  • Overload: a blade held fast to the glass raises the motor current until the wiper fuse blows. Motors are then replaced in error for a fuse fault.
  • Water: on a VW T5 with double-wing rear doors, water entering along the wiper shaft can damage the rear wiper motor. Oxidation inside can leave a permanent positive connection.
  • Corroded earth: on a Mazda 3 built from January 2008 to March 2009, a corroded motor earth can cut the front wipers. We fit an additional earth cable.
  • Control unit errors: a Golf 7 built from 2012 to 2017 can store a communication fault between the wiper motor and the multifunction control unit.
  • Lost park setting: linkage work that moves the motor shaft off its parked position leaves the wipers parking in the wrong place.
  • Dry, dusty glass: on a 2024 Pajero Sport, wiping a dirty windscreen in dry weather can scratch the glass and damage the wipers.

The weather station at Dubai International Airport counts 17.7 days of rising sand annually. On a 2024 Pajero Sport the rain sensor reacts to dust as well as rain. On a 2024 Pajero Sport, a dusty screen can therefore start the automatic wipers on dry glass.

For the Golf 7 fault, we disconnect the battery to reset the motor and clear the codes. A Volkswagen dealer handles any software update, and we send the car there for it. For every other cause, we repair the part our circuit tests point to.

In depth

What a correct wiper motor repair gives you

Each repair we make targets the cause of the stopped wipers, not the symptom.

Wipers and washers ready for the RTA test

Windscreen wipers and screen washers sit among the visibility items of the RTA test for light vehicles. Your car goes to its test with both systems working.

Front wipers clear of a rear fault

On a VW T5 with double-wing rear doors, a faulty rear wiper motor can upset the front wipers as well. With the rear motor replaced, the front wipers answer the switch again.

Arms parked clear of the bonnet

For the 2024 Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi asks owners to open the bonnet with the wipers parked. Opening it with the arms off their park position can damage the bonnet, the arms or the windscreen. Wipers that park every time keep all 3 safe.

Automatic wiping that follows the rain

A failed rain sensor hands control to the wiper module, which falls back to interval wiping. A working sensor brings back sweeps that speed up and slow down with the rain.

Interval sweeps on time

The interval control sends an impulse through a relay for each single sweep. A sound relay keeps the pause you select between sweeps.

A clear view when reversing

On a 2024 Pajero Sport, the rear wiper runs a short burst of sweeps by itself when reverse is selected with the wipers on. A working rear motor keeps that rear view clear.

Prevention

How wiper motor replacement works at Royal Prince Auto Care

The job moves from the fuse box to the motor, so each test clears one part before the next.

Note the fault and check the fuse

We note which wiper settings fail and whether the rear wiper is affected. We then check the wiper fuse and the interval relay.

Read and record the fault codes

On cars where a control unit runs the wipers, we read the fault memory. Each entry is recorded and compared with the complaint, and the memory is cleared after that.

Test the supply and earth at the motor plug

With the wiper switch on, we measure the voltage and the earth at the motor plug. A good supply with no movement leads us to the motor or the linkage, and a missing supply sends us back along the wiring.

Separate the linkage with the shaft held

We hold the motor arm with a tool while undoing its nut, so the motor shaft stays in its parked position. The linkage then comes away without moving the park setting.

Fit the new motor or linkage

We fit the new motor or the new linkage and connect it. Turning the wiper switch on and then off returns the motor to its park position before the arms go back on.

Test every wiper setting

We run the slow, fast, interval and automatic settings, the washer and the rear wiper on wet glass. Each blade must then come to rest at the base of the screen.

Book a wiper motor test by phone or WhatsApp, naming the setting that has failed.

Cost and value

What decides the cost of windscreen wiper motor replacement in Dubai?

Windscreen wiper motor replacement in Dubai is priced on 5 factors: the failed part, its position, linkage wear, a sensor fault and maker software. Position means a front or a rear motor. A fault traced to a fuse, a relay or an earth leaves the original motor in the car.

A worn linkage adds a second part to a motor job, and a VW T5 with double-wing rear doors has 2 rear wiper motors. The circuit tests in our process identify which of these factors your car has.

Why Royal Prince

Why choose Royal Prince Auto Care for windscreen wiper motor replacement

Our wiper work starts at the circuit and ends with a full test of the system:

Front and rear systems

We replace rear wiper motors on hatchbacks, estates and SUVs as well as front motors. The rear wiper gets its own test.

One fault, one part

We replace the part that failed, from an earth cable to a complete motor. Sound parts stay in the car.

A motor made for your car

We fit a motor built for your car's wiping angle, park position and linkage. The blades then sweep the area the car's maker designed.

Linkage inspected at every motor change

We inspect the linkage rods and their ball joints each time a motor comes out. A worn linkage is replaced along with the motor.

Maker software referred on

Wiper coding, software updates and rain sensor set-up that call for the maker's own tester mode are referred to the maker's dealer. We hand on that step and complete everything else.

Any make we service

We carry out windscreen wiper motor replacement on all makes in our DIP 2 workshop.

In Dubai conditions

How do you make a windscreen wiper motor last longer in Dubai?

A windscreen wiper motor lasts longer in Dubai with 4 habits. Clear a blocked blade with the car switched off, keep washer bursts short, keep the air intake clear and leave the sensor area bare. Each habit keeps a load or a false signal away from the motor or the washer pump.

A blocked blade freed with the car off

On a 2024 Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi's advice is to stop somewhere safe, switch off and then clear whatever blocks the blades. The wipers are then checked before use.

Short washer bursts

For the 2024 Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi limits each washer burst to 20 seconds and forbids use on an empty reservoir. Either mistake can burn out the washer motor.

An open air intake

On a 2024 Pajero Sport, leaves collected in the air-intake plenum in front of the windscreen can plug its water drains. We clear the plenum drains each time the cover is off for motor work.

Nothing over the rain sensor

A sticker or a water-repellent coating over the sensor area stops the 2024 Pajero Sport's rain sensor reading the rain. Its wipers can then fail to work as designed.

FAQs

Windscreen Wiper Motor Replacement questions, answered

Is windscreen wiper motor replacement needed when the wiper fuse blows?

No. A wiper fuse blows when the motor draws too much current, and a blade stuck to the glass is enough to cause that. Wiper motors are replaced in error for this fuse fault. Check the fuse first, and replace the motor when it still fails with a new fuse fitted.

Why do my wipers start working once the car reaches 25 km/h?

On a VW Golf V, the cause can be the bonnet contact. A safety system stops the wipers striking an open bonnet, and with no signal from the contact the control unit blocks them. The wipers return from about 25 km/h, and no fault code is stored. We check, clean or replace the bonnet contact.

Why do automatic wipers sweep a dry windscreen?

Automatic wipers sweep a dry windscreen when the rain sensor reads something other than rain. For the 2024 Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi lists insects or objects on the glass over the sensor, strong direct sunlight and electromagnetic waves. Moving the lever to OFF stops the sweeps.

Do rain-sensing wipers need setting up after a new windscreen?

Yes. A rain sensor must be initialised after certain work, and a windscreen with different characteristics needs coding. Mitsubishi sends owners of a 2024 Pajero Sport to its dealer when the windscreen is replaced.

Do worn wiper blades harm the wiper motor?

Yes. A poorly performing blade shakes as it wipes, and that excess shaking can harm the wiper motor. Our car wiper blades service covers blade checks and fitting.
