An Audi that needs suspension repair shows 6 signs. The driver meets a compressor that runs on after locking, a body stuck low, a steering lamp, bouncing, a corner clunk and a steering rumble. The first 2 cards apply to the air-sprung models they name.
On an A6 (C6), A8 (D3 or D4), S6 or S7 (C7) with air suspension, the compressor can keep running after the car is locked. The control unit stores codes for excess compressor temperature and for a leak in the system. We replace a compressor that the heat has ruined.
On the same Audi models, a failing compressor makes the control unit lower the body to its lowest position and light the warning lamp. The height then no longer adjusts, although driving is not affected. We run the compressor on direct current and open its relay, and eroded relay contacts mean a new compressor and relay together.
On an Audi with rear-wheel steering, a sensor signal discrepancy can light the steering warning lamp in the instrument cluster. We read the steering fault code and hand the car to an Audi dealer, which applies Audi's remedy.
A sound damper lets the body settle within 1 or 2 shrinking movements after a bump. A worn damper leaves the body bouncing, and the tyre can lose contact with the road. We replace the worn dampers that let the body bounce.
A ball joint or track rod end with play bangs over rough surfaces and through corners. The steering then feels either slack or heavy, and one tyre edge wears ahead of the other. We check for play with the wheel raised, then replace the joint or its arm.
A worn strut top mount grinds or rumbles, sends vibration into the car and leaves the steering pulling or binding. The mount is the strut's upper pivot, so its wear also lets the strut top shift and moves the alignment angles. A new mount goes on with every strut we replace.

The enhanced A8 has adaptive air suspension with controlled damping as standard. Every seven-seater Q7 of the 2018 range has air suspension. The Q8 e-tron comes with air suspension and controlled damping, and its ride height adapts across 76 mm. The SQ8 TFSI has adaptive air suspension sport as standard.
On a Q8 with adaptive air suspension, the body lowers in stages as speed rises. At 160 km/h and above, or in dynamic mode, it sits 40 mm below the normal level. A drop that stays when the car is parked signals a leak, which we trace and seal.
No. On the SQ7 TDI, an electric motor with a three-stage planetary gearbox separates or joins the 2 anti-roll bar halves, with up to 1,200 Nm. Audi states the system requires no oil and no maintenance. We check its bar links and mounts on the lift and replace worn ones.
