A5 engine repair

We repair the 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder, the 3.0 TFSI V6 of the S5 and the 2.9 TFSI twin-turbo V6 of the B9 RS 5. A first-generation RS 5 carries a naturally aspirated 4.2 FSI V8, and we work on that engine too.

A5 transmission repair

Every A5 updated for 2020 has an automatic gearbox, either the 7-speed S tronic or the 8-speed tiptronic. We repair both, along with the quattro drive and the optional sport differential of the S models.

A5 oil change and service

A service on the A5 covers the engine oil and filter, the sump plug seal, the spark plugs and the air and pollen filters. Brake fluid joins the list when it falls due, and we carry out each due item.

The A5 updated for 2020 has standard, sport or controlled damping suspension, and the updated RS 5 offers hydraulic Dynamic Ride Control. We replace worn dampers, springs and arms, then set the wheel alignment.

A5 AC repair

Warm air from the vents leads us to the failed AC part, which we replace. The refrigerant then goes in by weight, as the label under the bonnet lists it.

A5 Cabriolet roof repair

The A5 Cabriolet updated for 2020 has an acoustic cloth top that opens in 15 seconds and closes in 18. We trace a top that stops part way to the failed part and replace it.

A5 electrical repair

The A5 updated for 2020 runs the MIB 3 infotainment platform with a 10.1-inch MMI touch display. Electrical and infotainment faults go back to a unit, a wire or a sensor, and we repair the one at fault.

Confirm the engine and gearbox

Replace the failed part

We fit the part the tests point to and clear the stored faults.

Road-test the car

The A5 goes back on the road under the conditions recorded at the start. Afterwards, we recheck levels and joints with the engine cold.

The gearbox confirmed before the oil

On the A5 Cabriolet updated for 2020, most engines pair with the 7-speed S tronic, while the diesel takes the 8-speed tiptronic. We confirm the gearbox before any gearbox oil goes in.

Both V6 cooling circuits checked

The 3.0 TFSI and the 2.9 TFSI cool the crankcase and the cylinder head in separate circuits. After cooling work on an S5 or RS 5, we check each circuit and replace any part that still leaks.

The hot inner V of the RS 5

On the 2.9 TFSI, both turbochargers sit inside the 90-degree V, on the exhaust side, and build up to 1.5 bar. Each B9 RS 5 engine job includes a check of the hoses and wiring there, and we replace heat-damaged parts.

Valvelift tested on a rough RS 5

At part load, the 2.9 TFSI closes its intake valves at 130 degrees of crank angle. Under load the valvelift system stretches that to 200 degrees and raises the lift from 6.0 to 10 mm. A rough-running B9 RS 5 gets a valvelift test, and we replace the actuator that fails.

The mild hybrid starter checked

On a 12 V mild hybrid A5, a belt alternator starter on the crankshaft recovers energy when the car slows. We test that starter and its belt on these cars, then replace the part that fails.

Matched tyres on a quattro A5

On an A5 with the 0CL gearbox, differences in tread depth, width or tyre make change how the centre differential locks in tight bends. We fit tyres as matched sets on both axles.
