A failing Alfa Romeo engine shows 6 signs, 5 of them on the instrument panel. Those 5 are a steady engine light, a flashing one, red oil temperature, the coolant temperature symbol and the diesel's flashing glow plug symbol. The sixth is a coolant smell, white smoke or bubbles in the coolant tank.
A MY24 Giulia keeps its engine light on when the injection system is not working properly. Alfa Romeo ties the steady light to high emissions, lost performance, poor driveability and high fuel use. The car can carry on at moderate speed, but long use with the light on can cause damage.
We read the stored supply or ignition fault, test that circuit and renew the component that does not pass.
On the same Giulia, a flashing engine light warns that the catalytic converter can be damaged. Alfa Romeo has the driver ease off the accelerator until the flashing stops, then continue at moderate speed.

On a MY24 Giulia, the oil temperature gauge and its symbol turn red when the oil runs too hot. A separate symbol marks oil overheating, and if it lights while driving, Alfa Romeo has the driver stop the car and the engine at once.

On a MY24 Giulia, this symbol means the engine has overheated. Alfa Romeo has the driver stop, switch off, check the reservoir against the MIN mark and look for leaks.
We find the hose, pump or seal that lets the coolant out and replace it.
A MY24 Giulia 2.2 JTD flashes its glow plug symbol after starting, or during long cranking, when the preheating system has a fault. The car can still be used once it starts, and Alfa Romeo wants the fault seen to promptly.
We test the preheating circuit, then replace the glow plug or other part that fails.
On a MY24 Tonale, Alfa Romeo lists a strong coolant smell as a sign of engine overheating. White smoke from the exhaust or the engine, bubbles in the coolant tank and a temperature needle near H complete its list.

Yes. Alfa Romeo lists a main and a secondary cooling circuit for each MY24 Giulia and Stelvio with the 2.0 T4 or 2.9 V6. In a MY24 Giulia, the 2.9 V6 circuits hold 11.2 and 5.5 litres, and the 2.0 T4 circuits 8.6 and 4.3 litres.
Alfa Romeo's base fill for both circuits is equal parts distilled water and its listed coolant. After a repair, our technicians fill and bleed each circuit to its own level.
A MY24 Tonale 2.0 T4 adds an intercooler coolant reservoir. The Mild Hybrid runs a low-temperature circuit, which Alfa Romeo has filled at a dealer with vacuum-filling equipment. That circuit and the Plug-in Hybrid's high-voltage coolant circuit go from us to the dealer.
Engine work on an Alfa Romeo follows this order, from the job card to the road.
Each red or amber symbol is logged against the engine code. So is the timing of the fault: cold start, warm engine, idle or full load.
Every control unit that runs the engine has its fault memory read, along with the data saved with each code. A code whose fix is Alfa Romeo software goes on to the dealer.
Each circuit is held above 1 bar while the gauge is watched for any fall. A drop sends us looking for the wet joint, and the leaking part is replaced. The cap gets a separate check of the pressure at which it opens and of its vacuum valve.
Compression readings pick out a weak cylinder, and air is then fed into it. Escape at the intake marks an intake valve, at the exhaust an exhaust valve, at the oil filler the rings. Bubbles at the radiator mark the head gasket, and we renew whichever part the test names.
Clean air goes into the sealed intake first, and the rate of pressure loss is timed. Smoke follows to show the escape point, and a new hose or seal goes in where it leaks.
The repaired car goes out under the conditions the job card noted. Back in the workshop, every control unit is read again and the joints are checked for leaks.

Three things set what Alfa Romeo engine repair costs in Dubai: the engine, the parts swapped as a group and how far damage travelled. A MY24 Giulia 2.9 V6 has 6 cylinders in a V, more to reach than the 4 in line of a 2.0 T4. A fault caught at the first symbol touches fewer parts.

On the 2.2 JTD diesel, our compression test stays dry. Adding oil to a diesel cylinder for a wet test risks extensive engine damage.

Four habits lengthen an Alfa Romeo engine's life in Dubai: right petrol, a calm finish to hard drives, no blip at switch-off and matching coolant. Each habit is Alfa Romeo's own advice for the MY24 Giulia. Its schedule adds an engine management check with diagnosis equipment, and we run that check.
The MY24 Giulia's 2.0 T4 and 2.9 V6 need unleaded petrol of at least 95 RON. Alfa Romeo recommends 98 RON or more to meet the emission limits with the lowest fuel use and full performance.
After a demanding route, Alfa Romeo advises leaving the engine running and slightly accelerated for a short spell before you switch it off.
Alfa Romeo calls a quick burst on the accelerator before switching off pointless. It wastes fuel and damages the engine.
A MY24 Giulia takes top-ups of the same coolant type already in its reservoir, never mixed with another antifreeze. After a top-up with an unsuitable product, Alfa Romeo says not to start the engine at all.

No. On a petrol Giulia or Stelvio with a GPF, the symbol asks for a filter regeneration and is no reason for a workshop visit. Hold more than 60 km/h with the engine above 2,000 rpm, varying the speed, until the symbol and its message clear.
