Alfa Romeo links that cycling to fast window misting and humid air with unpleasant smells, and advises limiting Start&Stop Evo in severe climates. When the smell stays with the system off, we clear the evaporator drain and renew the passenger compartment filter, then retest the cooling.
Cooling that vanishes briefly, then comes back unaided, is the mark of an iced evaporator. Evaporator temperature control works to a minimum of +0.5 °C, yet a blocked cabin filter can drag the coil under 0 °C. We renew the filter, check how the evaporator temperature is controlled and repair whatever lets the coil ice up.
A hiss when the AC is turned on or off means refrigerant is escaping. As the charge falls, the compressor is cut out by the pressure switch below 2 bar, and the vents blow warm air. Our fix is to locate the leak, replace the part that lets gas out and recharge.
