Alfa Romeo brakes that are worn or faulty show 6 signs. The display carries 4 of them: the pad wear symbol, the disc temperature symbol, the parking brake failure light and the low brake fluid light. The other 2 reach the driver as noise or vibration after hard use and a weak first stop after standing.
A MY24 Giulia or Stelvio shows this symbol once pad wear hits its limit. Alfa Romeo asks for the brakes to be seen promptly. Our technicians measure the friction material on both axles and fit a new axle set where it has reached the limit.
This Giulia and Stelvio symbol warns that the discs are too hot, and the driver slows down to let them cool. Repeated overheating leaves blue spots or radial cracks on a cast-iron disc. We inspect both discs for those marks and renew the two discs of that axle together once either shows them.
Alfa Romeo notes that an overheated Giulia brake can make noise or vibrate under braking. Uneven disc thickness sends a similar pulse, and depending on the car, 0.015 mm of difference around the disc can cause judder. A micrometer measures the variation, and discs over the limit are renewed.
On the Giulia and Tonale, this light reports a fault in the electric parking brake. The fault can leave the brake applied after the driver releases it, partly or fully blocking the car. We read the parking brake codes, then repair the motor or wiring they point to.
A Giulia or Tonale lights this lamp when the reservoir level falls below its minimum. Alfa Romeo names a circuit leak as a possible cause. We find the leak, and an Alfa Romeo dealer makes the repair and refill on these IBS models.
Alfa Romeo warns that water deposited on a Giulia's discs lowers braking efficiency on the first press. A car left unused also grows corrosion on its discs. We check both disc faces for rust ridges and pitting and renew a pitted disc.

The Integrated Brake System (IBS) splits Alfa Romeo brake work between our workshop and an Alfa Romeo dealer. The MY24 Giulia and Stelvio carry it, and so does the Tonale. The Giulia and Stelvio handbooks send any brake fluid filling or replacement to the dealer.
On the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, the IBS is one electro-mechanical unit for both braking and stability control. On a Giulia, it also removes the light pedal pulse that a conventional system gives the driver when ABS acts.
On the Tonale, Alfa Romeo Middle East states that the IBS maximises energy regeneration. The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid recharges its high-voltage battery whenever the brake pedal is pressed, and under certain conditions its rear motor also slows the car. In an emergency, the conventional brakes still deliver full braking efficiency.
On these IBS models, Alfa Romeo brake pads and disc replacement stays in our workshop, along with calliper slide service. We read the fluid's boiling point and refer fluid under 180 °C, any bleed and any brake software update to an Alfa Romeo dealer. Tonale high-voltage work on the battery or electric drive goes there too.
Alfa Romeo rear brake work starts with the parking brake because a Giulia or Stelvio holds each rear calliper with its own electric motor. A control module drives both motors, and in its default setting the car applies them whenever the engine stops. So the system goes into maintenance mode before any rear pad is removed.
Where fitted, the "Brake service" item in the Connect settings menu switches the brake system into its maintenance procedure. On other cars, a diagnostic tool sets the same mode. On any electric parking brake, turning the piston back to its start position by hand damages its spindle or pressure nut.
We release the rear callipers through that mode and calibrate the parking brake after the new pads are seated. A car with a faulty battery cannot unlock its parking brake until the battery is replaced, so that battery is changed first.

A short drive confirms the complaint, and we check that no worn suspension part is behind it. Back in the bay, the brake system and parking brake codes are read.
Each disc is gauged in no fewer than 4 spots, and the thinnest reading counts. That reading is compared with MIN TH, the wear limit stamped on the disc.
Every piston, seal and dust boot is inspected, and the slide pins receive the grease their calliper maker names. On an IBS model, an Alfa Romeo dealer renews any cracked or damp hose.
A scraper takes rust and deposits off every hub face, because a speck left there tilts the disc. The mounted disc then runs out by 0.10 mm at most over one revolution.
Retracting the pistons lifts the reservoir level, which we monitor as the new pads go in.
Repeated presses restore normal pedal travel before the car moves. During the test drive we brake gently, never longer than 3 seconds at a time, and note any noise.

Before a Giulia stands unused for more than a month, Alfa Romeo has the owner check that the electric parking brake is not applied.
