The signs of a Toyota transmission problem start with a fluid heat message, a flashing gearbox light and a missing S or M indicator. A CVT in fail-safe, a differential heat warning and a recalled 10-speed leak complete the list. We read the gearbox codes, trace each sign to its cause and repair that cause.
A Land Cruiser FJ shows this message when its automatic transmission fluid runs too hot, and a Camry shows a longer version. A hot Camry automatic also picks a higher shift range by itself to protect the gearbox. Our check covers the fluid level and its state, and the repair is a top-up, fresh fluid or a sealed leak.
The Hilux automatic transmission fluid temperature light carries 2 meanings. Lit steadily, it marks fluid that is too hot; flashing, it marks a malfunction in the automatic transmission system. We read the stored code from the gearbox control unit and replace the part it names.
On a Land Cruiser FJ, an S indicator that stays off after the lever moves to S signals a transmission system fault. A Camry CVT that shows no sequential mode indicator in M gives the same warning. In both cases the gearbox runs as in D, and we read its codes and replace the part they name.
On a Corolla or Camry CVT, the On-Board Diagnostics watch every solenoid that controls shifting. A fault there restricts shifting or ratio control and lights the malfunction indicator lamp. The code names the failed solenoid, which we replace.
On a Hilux, this message means the differential oil is too hot. Toyota's answer is H2 and a lower speed, or a stop in a safe place. We measure the differential oil level and look at its state, then renew the oil or seal the leak.
Qatar's 2026 recall covers VJA300 and FJA300 models of 2025 and 2026. Their 10-speed automatic has linear solenoids that can let fluid leak from the housing. Saudi Arabia recalled 18,708 Land Cruiser and LX600 cars of the 2025 and 2026 models in 2026 over the shift solenoid valves.
A 2026 UAE recall of Land Cruiser 300s built from 2021 to 2024 adds excessive rotational speed to the 10-speed fault. We check a car against these recalls. A Toyota dealer does the recall work on any car we find covered.

Toyota's Direct Shift-8AT and Direct Shift-10AT pair widened gears with a compact torque converter. Together they give a broad lock-up range and a quick, smooth response to the accelerator.
Close-ratio gears in the Direct Shift-10AT suit each gear to its speed range, above all at low and middle speeds. The result is smooth, quick gear changes.
On the Direct Shift-8AT and 10AT, Toyota set acceleration to pass without lag, even under a sudden, heavy press of the pedal.
A Land Cruiser FJ towing a trailer keeps its engine braking effective in S mode at range 5 or lower. A working S mode gives the driver that range.
Optimised clutch friction material cuts clutch torque loss in the Direct Shift-8AT and 10AT by about half against a conventional 6-speed. That lifts transmission efficiency.
With the lever in D, AI-SHIFT on a Land Cruiser FJ picks the gear to suit the driver and the road.
A Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, Camry or Corolla used hard gets fresh gearbox fluid on the severe-use cycle in its owner's manual. That cycle inspects the fluid at each 40,000 km or 24 months. It replaces the fluid every 80,000 km or 48 months.
The FJ manual sets it for towing, taxi or courier work with long idling, and long runs at 80 percent or more of top speed. On a Camry or Corolla, the same fluid also serves the front differential.
On dusty roads and when towing, the Land Cruiser FJ also takes new transfer oil every 40,000 km or 48 months. Towing brings its differential oil changes forward to every 20,000 km or 24 months. Each car's use goes on our records, and we service the gearbox, transfer case and differentials on the matching cycle.

We record the display message, the gear, and whether it came on hot, in traffic or while the car was stuck.
Codes are read from the transmission control unit itself. A generic engine scan can show just one code: the gearbox asking for the warning lamp.
The level is checked at the specified fluid temperature, through the filler plug, while the engine idles.
Metal caught on the pan magnet measures the abrasion in the fluid. Burnt-smelling fluid, chips or metal fragments reveal internal damage, and we refer a gearbox that needs a rebuild to a Toyota dealer.
Each gearbox gets the fluid type its owner's manual names for that engine. Our refill follows the reference quantity listed beside it.
The fault memory is erased, and a drive through every gear at working temperature confirms the repair.

A 4WD Hilux or Land Cruiser FJ adds transfer oil and differential oils to a fluid service.
What sets our Toyota gearbox method apart:
A Hilux or Fortuner with the 2TR-FE holds 8.5 litres of ATF WS. The 1GR-FE, 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV versions hold 9.5 litres, so we read the engine code first.
A Camry automatic holds 7.3 litres of ATF WS with the A25A-FKS and 7.5 litres with the 2GR-FKS. An M20A-FKS Camry carries a CVT holding 8.54 litres of CVTF FE, and we check which unit the car carries before draining.
A Toyota hybrid drives through a power split device, which divides engine power between making electricity and driving the car. The Corolla Hybrid transaxle runs on ATF WS, and we refer its work to a Toyota dealer.
A Land Cruiser FJ with an unfinished transfer shift has both driveshafts disengaged, so it can roll freely even in P. We wait for the 4WD indicator to settle before moving the car.
A manual Corolla takes 2.4 litres of 75W GL-4 gear oil, not the CVT Fluid FE of its automatic versions. We fill each manual Toyota with the grade and quantity its manual lists.
The Land Cruiser FJ and Camry schedules list the automatic transmission fluid cooler hoses and connections as an inspection item. We inspect them at every gearbox service and replace a hose that seeps.

Book the gearbox fluid change at the distance the severe-use cycle above sets for your driving. Keep each change recorded, so the next one falls due on time.
On a Camry, Hilux or Corolla, return to D and lift off the accelerator. Stop in a safe place, select P and leave the engine idling until the message clears, then drive on.
Lift off the accelerator the moment a fluid temperature warning appears while you work a stuck Land Cruiser FJ loose. Wait for it to clear before trying again.
Transport a Land Cruiser FJ with all 4 wheels off the ground. Towed with its tyres on the road, its drivetrain can be damaged.
Drive a Land Cruiser 70 in four-wheel drive for at least 16 km each month to keep its 4WD parts lubricated. Use H2 on dry, hard roads and L4 for hard pulling in sand.
Start a manual Land Cruiser 70 off in first gear, since a higher gear can damage the clutch. Come to a full stop before selecting reverse.
