A Range Rover gearbox fault shows 5 signs: a fault message, casing oil drips, transfer box judder, no reverse and no drive after remote start. Each sign below names the model codes it applies to. We read the gearbox control unit first, because each sign has its own cause.
On an L405 Range Rover, a detected transmission fault brings a message in the Message centre and a reduced set of gears. In limp-home mode, P, R, N, D and S still work so the car reaches a safe place. We read the stored codes, then repair the fault they point to.
JLR has documented oil weeping through the gearbox casing on L405 and L494 cars in listed VIN ranges, with the 8HP70 or 8HP45 unit. The leak is mistaken for a rear oil seal or pan leak, which leads to repeat repairs. We trace the drip to its source, and refer a casing leak to a Range Rover dealer for JLR's gearbox replacement.
JLR has traced transfer box judder on the L405 and L494 to Auto Terrain Response overloading the transfer case clutch, which degrades its oil early. JLR's fix is new transfer case software plus 2 oil flushes around a road test. We flush the transfer case oil, and a Range Rover dealer loads the software.
On the previous Evoque with the 9-speed automatic, R flashes, "Transmission Fault" appears and reverse does not engage, while every forward gear still works. JLR traced it to gearbox control unit software. We check the unit for other stored faults, and refer the car to a Range Rover dealer.
Remote start on an L405 or L494 plug-in hybrid can light the engine warning lamp and flash D or R. The car then gives no drive at the first selection, a fault JLR traced to engine control software. We confirm the code and send the car to a Range Rover dealer for the update.

Yes, within JLR's limits for the L405 Range Rover: towed forwards on all 4 wheels, at 50 km/h at most, for 50 km at most. Towing in reverse or on 2 wheels causes serious gearbox damage. We check the gearbox codes and fluid on any Range Rover that reaches us on a tow.
A broken-down L405 selects P by itself, which stops a tow on all 4 wheels. The park release lever beneath the centre console cup holders locks the gearbox in N for recovery. JLR rules out a tow when N cannot be set, or when the rear electronic differential has failed locked.
Each Range Rover gearbox job follows these steps:
A generic code reader sees the engine unit's lamp request, not the gearbox code behind it. We connect to the gearbox and transfer box control units and read their own memories.
We drive the car to reproduce the complaint, and again once the repair is done, with the gearbox at working temperature.
Fluid that smells burnt or carries chips or metal marks internal damage. We read it with the pan magnet before choosing the repair.
A metal pan takes a new filter and sealing ring. A plastic pan has its filter built in, so we replace the pan as a unit.
After the first fill, we hold the engine at 2,000 rpm for 30 seconds so the converter takes up its fluid.
The 8HP automatic has its level set at the filler hole, with the engine running and the fluid at no more than 40 °C. We top up until fluid runs from the filler hole at that temperature.

On an L405, JLR advises against standing for a sustained period with a gear selected and the engine running. Select P or N when the engine idles for a long spell.
On an L405, keep the engine at idle while you select D or R, and while the car stands with a gear engaged.
On an L405, low range is for low-speed manoeuvring and harder off-road ground, never normal road driving. On an L494, stop the car before selecting R or a forward gear against its direction of travel.
JLR names frequent driving in dust or sand, and high-speed driving above 50 °C ambient, as arduous conditions that call for more frequent servicing. Book the gearbox fluid change earlier when your Range Rover lives in those conditions.

No. Code reading, leak tracing, fluid and filter changes, transfer box oil and road tests are workshop jobs. Our workshop in Dubai Investment Park 2 handles each of them. JLR software updates and gearbox replacement under JLR's own fixes stay with Range Rover dealers.
The park release is still set. On an L405 with the release activated, the selector stays at P while the selector indicator and the instrument panel show a flashing N. Deactivate the release once the car is off the recovery truck.
On an L405, a selector that failed to turn to P at the last switch-off holds the start. Select P, and the engine starts. We diagnose the selector when it keeps failing to reach P.
Yes, in the Lo to Hi direction. On an L405, slow to 60 km/h or less, select N and press the Lo button. The change from Hi to Lo takes place at a standstill.
