A Mercedes transmission problem shows 6 signs: rough shifts, a lost gear, a transfer case leak, a 4MATIC jolt, shudder and a GLE recall. Each card names the gearbox or model series it covers. We read the gearbox control unit, then repair the fault each sign leads to.
On a 206 C-Class, 214 E-Class or 223 S-Class with the 725.1, Mercedes checks engine, gearbox and 48 V unit software after a shift complaint. We confirm the shift on the road and refer outdated software to a Mercedes dealer for the update.
A 9G-TRONIC stops using any gear whose solenoid has a fault, and its control unit switches to limp-home mode on critical faults. We read which solenoid the code names, then repair or replace the controller unit that carries it.
On a 4MATIC car of model series 166, 292 or 167, Mercedes traces oil at the 725.0 transfer case joint to 3 causes. They are a loose collar nut on the output shaft, a leaking transfer case and a leaking radial shaft seal. We fit a new collar nut and flange, a new seal or a repaired transfer case, as the leak point shows.
On an all-wheel-drive Mercedes with the 725.0 or 725.1, a jolt or harsh shift can come from the transfer case and not the gearbox. Mercedes isolates it by unplugging the all-wheel-drive control unit or running the car in dyno mode. Our fix for a jolt traced there is a transfer case fluid check and flush.
A 9G-TRONIC shudder that appears while the torque converter clutch slips marks the converter. We watch the converter's actual values on the road to confirm it, then run 5 converter adaptations in a row.
A 2024 recall in the UAE covers 2,521 GLE and GLS cars of the 167 platform with the M256 engine and the 9G automatic. Its subject is gearbox control unit software that can fall short of specification. We read the gearbox unit and refer a covered car to a Mercedes dealer for the recall software.

A Mercedes gearbox depends on its model series. The 205 and 206 C-Class, 213 and 214 E-Class and 223 S-Class use the 9G-TRONIC 725.0 or 725.1. The CLA (118), A-Class (177) and GLA or GLB (247) use the 7G-DCT 724.0 or 8F-DCT 724.1 dual-clutch gearbox.
Mercedes also lists the 7-speed 722.9 automatic, and the 2026 electric C-Class drives through a two-speed transmission. The E 53 HYBRID carries a 120 kW motor in its AMG TCT 9G, and the C 63 S E PERFORMANCE uses the MCT 9G. We confirm the gearbox number on the car before choosing fluid or parts.
Each Mercedes gearbox job runs through these steps:
We read the quick test, the gearbox control unit log and its EEPROM data before any adaptation. On a 725.1, the EEPROM data cannot be reproduced after an adaptation, so we store a copy first.
We drive the car to repeat the fault, and compare the shift with a like Mercedes where one is at hand.
The 9G-TRONIC has its oil level checked by the overflow method, as on the 7G-TRONIC PLUS 722.9. We correct the level at the filler before any further test.
The 9G-TRONIC pan is plastic and holds both oil filters and the 2 debris magnets. We compare any debris with Mercedes reference pictures, then fit a new pan with its filters.
A new gearbox, torque converter or controller unit calls for an adaptation of the actuators and the converter lock-up clutch. We run the standstill adaptation with Mercedes diagnostics, which removes the need for an adaptation test drive.
The Transmission Health page shows each clutch and brake pack as OK or not OK after the adaptations. A pack that stays not OK marks an internal fault, and we replace it.

Mercedes replaces the whole 9G-TRONIC when more than 3 clutch or brake packs stay not OK after adaptation. A single failed pack is replaced on its own.

Mercedes notes that AMG variants of the 9G-TRONIC shift harder. We judge an AMG shift against that character, not against a standard model.
A faulty 48 V battery on a 206, 214, 223 or 254 can stay live above 3 V with the 12 V ground off. We measure it and disconnect the 48 V ground before gearbox work.
The E 300 e, GLC 300 e and GLE 400 e carry a 400 V high-voltage system. We identify the powertrain on the car before any gearbox work begins.
A 167 GLE transfer case comes with or without Torque-on-Demand, and Mercedes specifies a different fluid for each. We check the transfer case type on the car before refilling it.
Direct-acting solenoids make the Mercedes cleanliness rules for this gearbox stricter than before. We open the 9G-TRONIC on a cleaned bench.
When the park pawl lift solenoid fails, the Emergency-P function still moves the 9G-TRONIC into P. We read the park pawl position sensor, then replace the failed lift solenoid or actuator.

A Mercedes transmission in Dubai gains life from 4 owner habits. They are earlier fluid changes under hard use, the right top-up fluid, leak checks and a full stop before P. We service the gearbox fluid when hard use brings the change forward.
Shorter fluid change intervals suit cars driven fast for long spells, used for towing or driven in a sporty style. Book the change sooner when your Mercedes is used that way.
The golden-yellow GTL fluid of the 9G-TRONIC must not be mixed with the older red ATF134 or blue FE-ATF134. Keep those fluids out of the gearbox at every top-up.
On a 166 or 292 series car, gold or yellow drops come from the gearbox and red drops from the transfer case. On a 167, both fluids are gold, so the leak position decides. Tell us the colour when you book.
The DIRECT SELECT lever engages the park pawl below 8 km/h. Bring the car to a stop before you press P.

No. Gear selection on the 9G-TRONIC is electric, with no mechanical link from the DIRECT SELECT lever or the steering wheel shift buttons. A selector fault therefore shows in the control unit memory, and we read it there before replacing the faulty part.
Yes. On critical faults, the 9G-TRONIC control unit switches to limp-home mode so the car can be brought to the nearest service workshop. Drive it straight there, and we read the fault that started it, then repair its cause.
About 10 litres of golden-yellow GTL fluid in the 725.011 unit of the E 350 BlueTEC. Other 9G-TRONIC applications differ, so we fill to the overflow level not to a fixed volume.
