A Mercedes needs an engine oil that carries the MB number Mercedes lists for its engine, such as MB 229.52 or MB 229.71. Two cars with the same model name can carry different engines and different numbers. Mercedes states that the binding specification for each car sits in its owner's manual, and we fill to that number.

An M254 petrol engine without plug-in hybrid drive takes MB 229.71 or 229.72, in SAE 0W-20 and no other grade. The M256.9 six-cylinder and the M264 accept MB 229.51, 229.52, 229.61, 229.71 or 229.72.

The OM 654 diesel accepts MB 229.52, 229.61, 229.71 or 229.72, and the OM 656 diesel takes MB 229.52 or 229.61. A G 500 from the 2019 models, with the M176 V8, takes MB 229.52 or 229.61.

A Mercedes needs an oil change at the drain interval set in its owner's manual and maintenance instructions. Mercedes states that the drain interval can depend on the oil specification, and that certain specifications bring reduced drain intervals. The car's own documents give the figure for each engine and oil.

Engine design moves the interval too. On the OM 654 EVO diesel of the 2026 C-Class, Mercedes says the new active crankcase ventilation reduces wear and extends service intervals.
