Warning signs

What are the signs of a failing Mercedes engine?

A failing Mercedes engine shows 6 signs, and each one belongs to a named engine. Coolant warnings appear in red on the M256, in yellow on the M264 and with a misfire on the OM654 diesel. The other 3 are a low oil level warning, a red oil pressure warning and a check engine light on an AMG V8.

A red coolant warning on an M256

On the M256 inline six, a red coolant warning with code U019F00 or U019F87 leads to the electric coolant pump circuit. The pump takes both a 12 V plug and a 48 V plug.

We run the guided test, then clean and tighten each plug, the fuse box connections and the pump ground. When the pump reads below 2 ohms to the engine block or touches its heat shield, we modify the engine insulation. An open circuit inside the engine control unit then calls for a new unit.

A yellow coolant warning on an M264

The M264 fits the C-Class (205), E-Class (213) and GLC (253). On these cars, a yellow coolant warning with low flow codes can come from air trapped in the transmission cooler circuit. A low coolant level means a leak instead.

We repair the leak when the level is low. With the level correct, we bleed the transmission cooler circuit on a cold engine until coolant runs from the connection, then clear the codes.

Low coolant and a misfire on an OM654 diesel

An OM654 diesel that shows a low coolant warning, misfires and leaks no coolant outside can have an internal leak in its charge air cooler. Coolant then reaches the intake and the cylinders.

Through the throttle valve opening, we look for coolant inside the cooler and run a compression test when it is there. We then clean out the coolant and replace the charge air cooler and the glow plugs, followed by an oil and filter change.

A low oil level warning with oil under the car

On the M254 four-cylinder and the M256 six-cylinder, a low oil level warning with oil under the car can come from the rear crankshaft seal. That seal rolled out of shape when it was installed.

Behind the inspection cover beside the transmission, we check the bell housing for oil. When oil is there, the transmission comes out and we replace a damaged or leaking seal.

A red oil pressure warning on an M254

A red oil pressure warning on an M254 comes with code P052400 or P052497. The engine control unit has measured oil pressure that is too low.

The oil level comes first, because a low level has its own cause to find. We check for external leaks and record the oil pressure at idle, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. Then we repair the leak, level or oil supply fault behind the low reading.

A check engine light on an AMG V8

An AMG V8 from the M17x engine group with the check engine light on can run rough or lose power, with misfire codes stored. No single cause lies behind this fault.

On a G 63 (463) with the M177, the fix can be new engine control software. We test the ground connections, the ignition coils and the intake, then replace the failed part. A software case goes to a Mercedes dealer for the update.

What it covers

What our Mercedes engine repair includes

Our Mercedes engine repair in Dubai covers these jobs:

  • Fault memory and live data reading
  • Cooling circuit pressure test
  • Coolant pump, thermostat and radiator replacement
  • Cooling circuit bleeding and flushing
  • Oil leak tracing with trace powder
  • Crankshaft seal and timing case cover sealing
  • Oil pressure readings across the rev range
  • Compression and leak-down testing
  • Charge air cooler and turbocharger replacement

We carry out these jobs on the petrol, diesel and Mercedes-AMG engines of the ranges listed further down this page.

What we see

What causes Mercedes engine failure in Dubai?

Mercedes engine failure in Dubai has 6 causes. The first 3 are part faults: debris in the M139 coolant, a porous M254 timing case cover and a leaking OM654 fuel pump seal. Low oil, a weak coolant mix and sand in the intake complete the list.

  • Debris in an M139 coolant circuit: on the AMG 2.0 litre engine, debris sets code P012800 for a coolant temperature below the thermostat's set point. We replace the thermostat, expansion tank and main radiator, and refer the flush to a Mercedes dealer.
  • Porous casting on an M254: on a C-Class (206), oil seeps through the casting at the upper rear of the timing case cover. We confirm the leak with detection spray, clean the bolt bore dry and fit a new bolt with threadlocker at 20 Nm.
  • A leaking pump seal on an OM654: the shaft seal of the high-pressure fuel pump lets oil out at the crankcase. We fit a new pump with the redesigned 2.6 mm sealing ring in place of the 2.5 mm ring.
  • Low oil level: a turbocharger runs on engine oil, and a lack of lubrication is one of the most common causes of turbo failure. We find the cause of a turbo failure before a new unit goes on.
  • Weak coolant mix: too little antifreeze corrodes the thermostat, and the coolant pump seal needs antifreeze for lubrication. We replace a corroded thermostat and flush the whole circuit.
  • Sand in the intake: dust and sand drawn into the intake destroy a turbocharger, and a defective air filter lets them through. We check the air filter and replace a damaged one.

Dubai averages a daily maximum of 41.9 °C in August, has reached 48.8 °C and records rising sand on 17.7 days annually. In slow summer traffic the radiator fan carries the cooling load, because it runs whenever the airflow cannot cool the radiator. We read the fault memory, test the cooling circuit and trace the oil, then repair the cause found.

In depth

Benefits of a correct repair on a Mercedes engine

We fix the part that failed and the cause behind it, and you get these results:

Coolant warnings that stay off

With the circuit sealed and bled, the coolant holds its level and the warning lamp stays dark between services.

A clean floor under the car

A seal or cover that seals again keeps engine oil off the floor of your parking space.

A smooth idle on an AMG V8

With the misfiring cylinder repaired, the V8 idles without shaking and pulls with its full output.

A new turbocharger that lasts

A replacement turbo fitted once the cause is gone escapes the fault that ended the old unit.

Steady temperature in August traffic

A clean and sealed cooling circuit holds the engine at working temperature through slow summer traffic.

An oil level that holds

With the leak sealed, the oil stays between its marks from one service to the next, and the low oil level warning stays off.

In depth

How does the 48 V system change engine work on a Mercedes?

The 48 V system changes Mercedes engine work through the integrated starter-generator, a starter and alternator in one electric motor. On the GLS, it sits between the engine and the transmission. Every petrol and diesel engine of the 2026 C-Class carries a 17 kW version inside the 9G-TRONIC transmission housing.

Engine oil in the bell housing can reach that unit on the M254 and M256. We replace an integrated starter-generator that engine oil has contaminated.

On series such as the 206, 214 and 223, the 48 V battery contactors can stay closed once the 12 V ground is off. Before engine work, we measure the 48 V side and disconnect the 48 V battery ground when more than 3 V remains.

Prevention

How a Mercedes engine job runs at Royal Prince Auto Care

Our engine work on a Mercedes runs in this order, and the fault decides which tests apply:

Record the warning and its conditions

We note the warning colour and when the fault appears: cold, hot, at idle or under load. Those conditions return in the final road test.

Read the fault memory and live data

A diagnostic tester reads every stored code and the live engine values. The codes point to the tests the engine gets next.

Pressure-test the cooling circuit

The circuit stays under test pressure while we check the engine bay, the underside and the cabin for coolant. On an OM654, the test pressure stays at 1.5 bar or below to protect the circuit.

Trace engine oil leakage on a clean engine

We clean the leak area, apply trace powder and run the engine on the lift. Fresh oil in the powder marks the leaking seal or cover.

Measure compression and leak-down

A compression test finds the weak cylinder. Air fed into that cylinder then escapes at the intake, tailpipe, oil filler or radiator. The exit point names the fault: an intake or exhaust valve, the piston rings or the head gasket.

Road-test and read the fault memory again

Once the repair is complete, the codes are cleared and we drive under the recorded conditions. A final read of the fault memory and a leak check close the job.

Book a Mercedes engine check by phone or WhatsApp, and quote the model and the warning on the display.

Cost and value

What decides the cost of Mercedes engine repair in Dubai?

The cost of Mercedes engine repair in Dubai turns on 4 factors. They are the engine fitted, the access its parts need, the parts renewed together and the spread of the damage. A new turbocharger, for example, comes with a new charge air cooler, air filter, oil and oil filter.

We set the parts list from the test results, not from the warning alone.

Why Royal Prince

Why choose Royal Prince Auto Care for Mercedes engine repair

Our Mercedes engine work stands on these practices:

Engine code before the first test

Mercedes ties each engine fix to an engine family, such as the M254, the M256 or the OM654. We read the engine code from the car before testing starts.

Oil to the engine's own Mercedes sheet

We fill the oil grade that the Mercedes sheet lists for the engine. An M254 takes SAE 0W-20 to MB 229.71 or 229.72, and an M177.7 takes 0W-40 to MB 229.51 or 229.52. Low-viscosity grades in an engine not released for them can damage it.

Separators first on an AMG V8 rear seal

On an M17x V8 with oil at the rear main seal, we replace both air-oil separators first and test again. The seal plate comes out when the leak remains, with the sealant laid on the block.

Vacuum filling of the M264 cooling circuit

We refill the M264 cooling circuit by vacuum, as Mercedes sets out, so no air stays trapped in it.

A check for oil in the coolant tank

Each cooling job includes a look for oil in the coolant tank. Oil there marks a leak at the cylinder head gasket or the oil cooler, and we replace the part that leaks.

No sealant in the cooling circuit

We repair a coolant leak at its source and never pour sealant into the radiator.

Mercedes-AMG builds the M139 2.0 litre four-cylinder with up to 310 kW. The 2026 GLE 63 S and GLS 63 use the M177 EVO 4.0 litre biturbo V8. The G 500 runs the M176 V8 from its 2019 models on.

In Dubai conditions

How do you make a Mercedes engine last longer in Dubai?

A Mercedes engine lasts longer in Dubai through 4 owner habits. They are mixed coolant for top-ups, a gentle drive from cold, oil changes on time and clean radiator fins. Each habit protects the cooling circuit, the turbocharger or the oil that lubricates the engine.

Top up with mixed coolant

Plain water dilutes the antifreeze and can damage a polyamide expansion tank. Use coolant mixed to strength for any top-up.

Hold the revs low from a cold start

Full throttle straight after a cold start can tear the oil film inside the turbocharger. Keep the revs low while the engine warms up.

Change the oil on time

Oil kept in past its change point deteriorates and protects the engine less. Book the change when it falls due.

Rinse sand off the radiator gently

Dirt on the radiator fins cuts heat exchange, so the engine runs hotter and the fan runs without a break. A high-pressure jet damages the fins, so we clean them at low pressure at each cooling check.

FAQs

Mercedes Engine Repair questions, answered

Do I need a Mercedes dealer for Mercedes engine repair in Dubai?

No. A Mercedes dealer carries out recall work and engine control software updates. Our Dubai Investment Park 2 workshop repairs seals, coolant pumps, thermostats, charge air coolers and turbochargers. We refer software and recall cases to the dealer.

Is there an engine recall on Mercedes cars in the UAE?

Yes. A 2023 UAE recall covers the fuel pump impeller on 11 series from 2021 to 2024, such as the C-Class (206) and G-Class (463). A 2022 UAE recall covers fuel rail leaks on petrol C-Class (205), E-Class (213) and G-Class (463) cars. We check for open recalls, and a Mercedes dealer fixes them.

Can engine software cause a misfire on a Mercedes GLE or GLS?

Yes. A 2025 recall in Qatar covers 2023 to 2025 GLE and GLS cars. Their engine control software can raise combustion failures at idle and part load while the catalyst heats up. We read the misfire codes, and a Mercedes dealer loads the corrected software.

Does a Mercedes plug-in hybrid need engine repair?

Yes. Mercedes lists plug-in hybrid versions of the M 254 and M 256 petrol engines, and both take SAE 0W-40 oil to MB 229.51 or 229.52. We repair that petrol engine. Work on the 400 V system of a car such as the E 300 e goes to a Mercedes dealer.
