Warning signs
What are the signs your Chevrolet needs an oil change?
A Chevrolet gives 6 signs linked to its engine oil. They are the oil change message, the pressure light, a cold-start tick, a high level, an accidental reset and dark oil. We match each sign to its cause, then put it right.
Oil pressure warning light
Low oil in the sump lowers the pressure and lights the warning. Pull over, stop the engine and check the dipstick. We bring the level back with the listed grade, then trace the loss and repair it.
Ticking on the first cold start
A Tahoe or Suburban V8, a Camaro LT1 or a Corvette LT2 can tick on the first start of the morning. The cause can be a lifter that has not pumped up with oil. We check for a bent pushrod or collapsed lifter, then replace the lifters on the affected bank.
Level above the top mark
Fuel in the oil after short drives, or too much oil at the last change, pushes the level up. The crankshaft then dips into the oil and adds oil mist. We drain off the surplus until the dipstick reads between the marks.
Oil life system reset by mistake
On a 2024 Tahoe or Suburban reset by accident, Chevrolet sets the next service within 5,000 km of the last one. We read the last service record, then change the oil inside that limit.
Dark oil on the dipstick
Colour by itself is no reliable guide to the condition of oil, which can darken soon after a change. Our technicians judge it by the km, the months and the level instead.

What wears out Chevrolet engine oil in Dubai?
Chevrolet engine oil wears out in Dubai from dust, sand, hot city traffic, desert work, soot and turbo lubrication. Each one loads the oil with dirt or uses it up faster. Chevrolet lists 2 of them as severe service on the 2024 Tahoe and Suburban.
- Dust: on a 2024 Tahoe or Suburban, the oil life indicator does not detect dust in the oil.
- Sand: fine particles contaminate the oil and build up as sludge.
- Hot city traffic: driving mainly in heavy city traffic in hot weather is on the severe list.
- Sand and dust work: a car worked steadily in high sand or dust, such as on oil pipelines, is on the same list.
- Soot: combustion soot is what turns engine oil dark.
- Turbo lubrication: a turbocharged engine, such as the Traverse 2.5 litre or the Silverado 2.7 litre, uses more oil.
Rising sand blows on 17.7 days annually at Dubai International Airport, and the mean daily high there passes 35 °C from June to October. UAE summers cross 45 °C. On a Tahoe or Suburban driven in that dust, we change the oil sooner than every 10,000 km.

An engine kept cool and oiled
Besides lubricating, engine oil carries heat away and drives hydraulic parts inside the engine. Fresh oil at the right level does all of it.
Cleaner oil, less abrasion
Soot and dust in the oil scratch the surfaces they touch. A new filter fitted with the oil takes that grit out of circulation.
Oil ready at start-up
A new filter's return-stop valve stops the filter and oil channels emptying while the engine is off. Oil is ready to flow from the first turn of the key.
No oil past the filter
Once clogged, a filter lets oil bypass it to keep the engine lubricated, dirt and all. Changing the filter on time keeps that valve shut.
Less friction in the engine
Lower viscosity cuts friction between moving parts. Filling the low-viscosity grade Chevrolet lists holds on to that gain, where a thicker oil gives it up.
Guard against low-speed pre-ignition
Oil made to dexos1 Gen 3 is designed to improve the prevention of low-speed pre-ignition and cold running. Low-speed pre-ignition can damage newer engines.

Which oil does my Chevrolet need?
A Chevrolet needs the SAE grade and the GM oil standard that Chevrolet sets for its engine on cars sold in the Middle East. On a 2024 Tahoe or Suburban, the 5.3 and 6.2 litre V8s take full synthetic dexos1 oil in SAE 0W-20, 7.6 litres with the filter.
A 2024 Silverado 1500 takes SAE 0W-20 in its 5.3 and 6.2 litre V8s, and the 5.3 litre holds 7.6 litres with the filter. Its 2.7 litre four-cylinder takes SAE 5W-30, 5.7 litres with the filter. The 2024 Silverado HD 6.6 litre V8 takes SAE 5W-30, 7.6 litres with the filter.
The 2024 Traverse 2.5 litre turbo takes full synthetic dexos1 in SAE 0W-20, 5.2 litres with the filter. On a 2024 Camaro, the 3.6 litre V6 takes SAE 5W-30 and the 6.2 litre V8 takes SAE 0W-40. A 2026 Groove takes Dexos 1 Gen 3 in 5W-30: 3.5 litres on the LT and 4.0 litres on the RS.
On a 2024 Corvette, the Stingray and E-Ray 6.2 litre V8 takes SAE 0W-40, 7.1 litres. The Z06 5.5 litre V8 takes SAE 5W-50 to GM's Performance Engine Oil specification. For the Captiva and the Malibu, we fill to the grade listed for the engine in the car.

When do you need your Chevrolet oil change?
Chevrolet in the UAE sets an oil and filter change at each scheduled service. For the 2021 to 2025 Tahoe, service falls every 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. A 2019 to 2024 Silverado LD (1500) follows the same figures, or the oil life monitor when it calls sooner.
On a 2024 Tahoe or Suburban, the oil and filter are changed at least annually. For a 2026 Groove in the Middle East, the first change falls at 1,000 km or 3 months. After that, it steps every 10,000 km or 12 months up to 100,000 km.

Prevention
How a Chevrolet oil change in Dubai works at Royal Prince Auto Care
Each Chevrolet engine we service goes through these steps in this order.
Clean the plug, filler and dipstick
In sandy conditions, grit sits round the drain plug, filler cap and dipstick. We clean all 3 before opening them, so none of it reaches the oil.
Drain the old oil out
With the plug out, the old oil leaves the sump with the dust and soot it carries. We let it run until the sump is empty, then refit the plug.
Fit a new filter and sealing ring
Chevrolet changes the filter with the oil at every Tahoe service, and we fit a new one on every Chevrolet. The drain plug takes a new sealing ring. Where the ring is fixed to it, the whole plug is renewed.
Fill in stages to the top mark
We pour fresh oil up to the minimum mark, start the engine and let oil pressure build. Then 0.1 litre goes in at a time until the level meets the maximum mark.
Check the plug and filter for leaks
With the engine at idle, our technician inspects the drain plug and filter for seepage. We refit any part that seeps until both stay dry.
Reset the oil life system
On a 2024 Tahoe or Suburban, Chevrolet requires the oil life system to be reset at each change. We reset it on every Chevrolet that has one, so it counts from the new oil.

Does a Chevrolet oil change in Dubai include the gearbox fluid?
No. The gearbox runs on its own schedule. On a 2021 to 2025 Tahoe in the UAE, Chevrolet changes the transmission oil at 70,000 km. A 2024 Corvette's dual-clutch gearbox has its first external filter change at 10,000 km. We change the engine oil and filter on this job.
Can I use dexos1 Gen 3 oil in an older Chevrolet?
Yes. Oil made to dexos1 Gen 3 is backward compatible with cars that call for dexos1 Gen 2, the standard introduced in 2015. Gen 3 replaced Gen 2. We match the SAE grade Chevrolet lists for the engine as well.
When is the first oil change on a new Captiva?
At 1,000 km. In the UAE, Chevrolet makes an oil and filter change at 1,000 km mandatory on the 2021 to 2025 Captiva 1.5 litre. We carry out that first change and log the km for the next service.
