Warning signs

What are the signs of a Rolls-Royce engine fault?

A Rolls-Royce engine fault shows 6 signs. Check Control messages carry 2 of them: Top up coolant and low engine oil. The other 4 are an engine lamp with rough running, oil under the car, blue or black exhaust smoke and overheating in traffic.

The Top up coolant Check Control message

On a Rolls-Royce V12, Check Control message ID 166 reads Top up coolant. The message can appear with coolant still visible in the expansion tank. We establish whether coolant is missing or the tank misreads it, then fix that fault.

A low engine oil message between services

A low oil Check Control message on a Rolls-Royce V12 means the engine is losing oil. Our check separates a leak from burning, and we repair the one we find.

A misfire with the engine lamp on

An engine lamp with rough running on a V12 signals a misfire on one of its 12 cylinders. Weak ignition coils cause misfiring and lost performance. We replace the failed coil or spark plug and clear the stored fault.

Engine oil leaks under the car

Fresh drips under the parked car mean a leak, which differs from oil the engine burns. On a Phantom or Cullinan, our search includes the oil cooler line. We replace the gasket, seal or line that leaks.

Blue or black smoke from the exhaust

Blue smoke and a falling oil level mean the V12 burns oil, with both turbos suspect on a Cullinan, Ghost Series II or Dawn. An oil-starved turbo that cannot build boost leaves a rich mixture and black smoke. We repair the turbo oil feed or return, or replace the turbocharger.

Engine overheating in traffic

A rising temperature gauge, lost power or a loud pinging mark an engine that runs too hot. Switch off the AC as soon as the gauge rises. We replace the thermostat, coolant pump, fan or hose that let the heat build.

What it covers

  • Oil consumption measurement
  • Turbocharger oil feed and return repair

What we see

What causes Rolls-Royce engine faults in Dubai?

Rolls-Royce engine faults in Dubai come from 6 causes. Gulf and Middle East recalls cover 2: an oil cooler line on the Phantom and Cullinan, and a first-generation Ghost water pump. Rolls-Royce software, turbo oil starvation or sand, fouled spark plugs and soiled radiator fins make up the rest.

  • Oil cooler line: a Qatar recall covers the 2018 Phantom and Cullinan for an incorrectly installed oil cooler line. A Saudi recall of 43 cars, 2019 Cullinan and 2017 to 2018 Phantom, covers an oil cooling pipe that can corrode and wear over time. We refer a car inside either recall to a Rolls-Royce dealer.
  • Ghost water pump: Rolls-Royce recalled 280 first-generation Ghosts worldwide, more than 20 of them in the Middle East. The moulding around a water pump can begin to smoulder. A car on that list goes to a Rolls-Royce dealer for the pump work.
  • Tank ventilation software: on an affected MY13 Ghost, a wrong software installation leaves the fuel tank ventilation system switched off. Rolls-Royce reprograms both engine control units, so we pass the car to a Rolls-Royce dealer for the update.
  • Turbo oil starvation and sand: Turbochargers depend on clean oil and clean intake air. Poor lubrication is one of the most common reasons a turbo fails, and sand in the intake can wreck a turbo outright. We trace the failure to its source, oil supply or intake, and correct it before a new unit goes in.
  • Fouled spark plugs: long spells of slow driving and constant stop-start trips coat the plugs in carbon. Plug tips shed that carbon from 450 °C upward. Conductive deposits leak the spark to earth and the cylinder misfires. We fit new plugs and correct the mixture or oil fault that fouled them.
  • Soiled radiator fins: dirt, insects and leaves packed into the fins stop heat leaving the radiator. The engine runs hotter, the fan never stops and the AC loses strength. Our fin cleaning is by hand with no high-pressure jet, which damages the fins.

In August the daily maximum at Dubai International Airport averages 41.9 °C, and rising sand blows on 17.7 days annually. At walking pace in traffic, the fan moves all the air the radiator and condenser receive.

Our Rolls-Royce engine repair begins with the confirmed cause, never with a guessed part.

In depth

What a repaired Rolls-Royce V12 gives you

We work toward these results for the owner of a V12 Rolls-Royce.

A coolant message you can believe

With a misreading tank replaced, ID 166 returns to its job. Rolls-Royce sets the message to show when the level falls well below the MIN mark.

Peak torque just above idle

A healthy second-generation Ghost V12 gives its full 850 Nm from 1,600 rpm, 600 rpm above tick-over. Sound ignition and boost bring that pull back.

Even running on all 12 cylinders

Sound ignition coils end the misfiring and the performance loss that weak coils cause. Each of the 12 cylinders fires on time again.

A catalytic converter kept intact

An untreated misfire puts the catalytic converter at risk and lowers engine power. An early repair keeps both the converter and the power.

A replacement turbo that lasts

A turbo repair succeeds when the cause of the first failure is gone. The new unit then runs on clean oil and filtered air.

An oil level that holds

With the leak sealed or the burning stopped, the level holds between services. The low oil message stays off.

What we see

Why does a Rolls-Royce show Top up coolant with a full tank?

A Rolls-Royce V12 can show Top up coolant with a full tank because of a mis-fitted sleeve of silicate gel inside the expansion tank. Placed wrongly, the sleeve can block the passage to the level sensor chamber. The running engine then sucks that chamber empty, and the sensor reports low coolant.

Rolls-Royce names the expansion tank as the most probable cause. The fault concerns the high-temperature coolant circuit.

We work on a cold engine and check the level in the high-temperature circuit first. With no coolant in view, we top up and find where it went.

With coolant in view, we check the sensor plug and repair a corroded connector or renew the sensor. A sound plug leads us to replace the tank.

Prevention

How Rolls-Royce engine repair works at Royal Prince Auto Care

These 6 steps take a Rolls-Royce V12 from complaint to road test:

Record the messages and the conditions

We note each Check Control message and engine lamp. Engine speed, outside temperature and engine temperature at the moment of the fault go on record with them.

Run check engine light diagnostics

We read the engine fault memory and live data, including the misfire code of each cylinder. An affected Phantom of the RR1, RR2 or RR3 series carries software that can hinder P-code selection. Rolls-Royce fixes it with a software update, so we refer that car to a Rolls-Royce dealer.

Inspect the oil and the coolant

Both fluids get a check for level and condition. Engine oil in the expansion tank traces back to the head gasket or the engine oil cooler. We renew whichever of the two leaks.

Compare compression across the cylinders

On a misfiring V12 whose coil and plug test sound, we measure the compression of each cylinder. A wet test then separates worn rings from leaking valves, and we repair the part at fault.

Pressure-test the cooling system

We raise the cooling system to over 1 bar and hold it there. Any loss sends us to the leaking hose, joint, radiator or pump, which we replace.

Road-test under the original conditions

We drive the car at the speed, load and temperature that produced the fault. Oil and coolant levels and the opened joints get a final look afterwards.

For a Rolls-Royce engine check, send the model and the Check Control text by phone or WhatsApp.

Cost and value

What decides the cost of Rolls-Royce engine repair in Dubai?

The cost of Rolls-Royce engine repair in Dubai reflects 3 factors: the fault, the parts that change with it and earlier damage. A coil on 1 of 12 cylinders is a small job. A failed turbocharger brings a set of related parts, and a recall goes to the dealer.

Heat that runs on can seize a piston. In an engine with grey cast-iron cylinders, the aluminium piston grows with heat at twice the rate of the bore. We price the repair from the parts our tests show as failed.

Why Royal Prince

Why choose Royal Prince Auto Care for your Rolls-Royce engine

These practices set our V12 work apart.

Parts ordered by engine code

Rolls-Royce lists the N74L and N74N engines across the RR11, RR12, RR21, RR22 and RR31 series. Every part we order matches the engine code of the car being repaired.

Engine and turbo coolant both checked

A first-generation Ghost or a Wraith carries engine coolant and turbo coolant. We check and top up both levels on every engine job.

A new cap with each new tank

A faulty cap valve overpressures the cooling system. Each expansion tank we replace goes in with a new lid.

A full set with each turbocharger

Every replacement turbo we fit gets its own new air filter and charge-air cooler. The oil and oil filter change at the same time.

A flush, never a sealant

After a cooling part fails, we flush the whole system to clear debris. Radiator sealant never goes into a Rolls-Royce we repair.

Root cause before new parts

A new spark plug cures a fouling misfire for a short time when the cause stays. We remove the cause first, then fit the part.

Every model

Rolls-Royce models and V12 engines we repair

We repair the petrol V12 engines of these Rolls-Royce lines:

  • Phantom VII (RR1 to RR3)
  • Phantom VIII (RR11)
  • Phantom EWB (RR12)
  • Ghost first gen (RR4)
  • Ghost (RR21)
  • Ghost EWB (RR22)
  • Wraith (RR5)
  • Dawn (RR6)
  • Cullinan (RR31)

The Cullinan's 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 makes 420 kW and 850 Nm, and the Black Badge Cullinan raises that to 600 PS and 900 Nm. The Dawn runs a twin-turbo 6.6 litre V12 of 563 bhp and 780 Nm.

A Wraith develops 465 kW and 800 Nm. In the Phantom VII family, the Phantom Coupé carries a 6.75 litre V12.

In Dubai conditions

How do you make a Rolls-Royce engine last longer in Dubai?

Owners keep a Rolls-Royce engine healthy in Dubai with 4 habits. Keep to the oil interval, follow Condition Based Service, warm the engine before high revs and top up with mixed coolant. We renew the oil and filter on the CBS schedule when the car is with us.

Keep to the MY15 oil interval

For an MY15 Ghost or Wraith, Rolls-Royce sets the Rest of World service at 15,000 km or 12 months. Book the oil change at whichever comes first.

Follow Condition Based Service

On a Ghost or Wraith, CBS data decides when the engine oil and filter are renewed. Book that work as soon as CBS shows it due.

Warm the engine before high revs

High revs on a cold engine can tear the oil film in a turbocharger. Hold the revs low until the engine is fully warm.

Top up with mixed coolant

Antifreeze raises the coolant's boiling point and lubricates the coolant pump. Pure water can damage a polyamide expansion tank.

FAQs

Rolls Royce Engine Repair questions, answered

Can an independent workshop carry out Rolls-Royce engine repair in Dubai?

Yes. We repair Rolls-Royce V12 coolant, misfire, oil leak, turbo and overheating faults at Dubai Investment Park 2. Recall and software work, such as the GCC oil cooler line recalls, goes to a Rolls-Royce dealer.

Does the Rolls-Royce Spectre need engine repair?

No. The Spectre is the first fully electric Rolls-Royce, driven by 2 motors of 190 kW at the front and 360 kW at the rear. Our engine repair work covers the petrol V12 models.

Is it safe to drive a Rolls-Royce with a misfire?

No. Driving on with a misfire or a clear loss of performance risks damage to the catalytic converter. Book the car in, and we replace the coil or plug behind the misfire.

How much engine oil does a Rolls-Royce Ghost take?

A first-generation Ghost takes 11 litres of engine oil at a routine service, and so does a Wraith. Rolls-Royce set that quantity for both models from the start of production. We refill to 11 litres after engine work that drains the oil.
