"Service due in" on an Emira display
A MY26 Emira counts down to its next service on the instrument display, with a "Service due in" message in distance and days. Once the countdown reaches the service, we change the oil and filter as that service lists.

Red oil pressure light on an Emira
A MY26 Emira's red oil pressure light calls for an engine stop when it stays lit after start-up or comes on while the engine runs. Lotus rules out a restart until the cause is fixed. Our first check is the oil level, and we then trace the pressure loss to its cause and repair it.

A reading at the low dipstick mark
Oil at the low mark has been used or lost since the last fill. We top up to the Lotus grade, locate the leak and seal it.

Oil use between Lotus oil changes
A turbo engine such as the Emira 4-cylinder, with its single twin-scroll turbo, consumes more oil, since that oil lubricates the turbocharger as well. We fill to the high mark and log 1,000 km of driving. The oil the engine then takes to refill is its use, and we repair the cause of a high figure.

A drive through a dust storm
Lotus asks for a MY22 to MY25 Emira's oil and filter to be changed as soon as possible after driving in a dust storm. We change both on an Emira that has been through one, whatever the countdown shows.

Dark oil on the dipstick
Fresh oil can turn dark soon after a change, and colour is no reliable test of its condition. Our check rests on the countdown, the level and the car's recent driving instead.
