Inspect the condenser, fan and water shield
We check the condenser face, the cooling fan and each pipe joint for damage or oil traces. On an Emira, we raise the front access panel and inspect the HVAC water shield, where surface cracks are acceptable. A shield with perforations or tears is replaced, and so is any damaged condenser, fan or pipe.

Read the climate control fault memory
A scan tool reads the stored codes and live data of the climate control. Lotus links poor compressor lubrication to diagnostic trouble codes as well as to weak cooling. We repair or replace the sensor, actuator or circuit that a code names.

Measure pressures and vent temperature
With the engine running and maximum cold selected, our gauges log the pressure on both the high and low sides. The centre-vent temperature, outside temperature and humidity go on the same record. Our technician compares the set with the maker's figures, and readings outside them lead to step 4.

Trace and seal the leak
An electronic detector sweeps the pipes, unions, seals and condenser of the Lotus circuit for escaping gas. We renew the leaking pipe, union or seal it locates.

Replace the failed part and the drier
A new compressor, condenser, expansion valve or pipe goes in for the failed one. Lotus calls for a new receiver-drier after a rapid loss of charge from accident damage or a compressor failure. We fit a new drier every time the circuit is opened.

Charge by weight and run in the compressor
Evacuation removes air and moisture, and charging waits until the vacuum holds steady. The refrigerant is then weighed in to the charge specified for the car.
A new or refitted compressor runs in next, with the engine at idle and the AC at maximum cold for at least 120 seconds. We then repeat the step 3 readings and the leak check.
