What we see
What causes Bugatti engine failure in Dubai?
Bugatti engine failure in Dubai traces to radiator heat, hot charge air, sand, turbo oil starvation, weak coolant or worn ignition parts. All but the ignition wear act on the W16's 4 turbochargers or its 2 water loops. We test for each of these and repair the cause we find, or refer internal damage to a Bugatti dealer.
- Radiator heat: the Veyron relies on 10 radiators to hold its engine and the add-on parts at temperature. Soiled fins cut their heat transfer. We wash them at low pressure, as a high-pressure cleaner's jet harms fins.
- Hot charge air: on a Veyron, a low-temperature circuit with its own water pump cools the turbochargers' charge air by up to 130 degrees. We test that pump's flow and renew a pump that fails.
- Sand: intake air laden with sand can ruin a turbocharger, and every W16 carries 4. We check the air filter elements and replace a soiled one.
- Turbo oil starvation: lack of lubrication counts as one of the most common turbo failure causes, and a low oil level brings it on. We check the level and trace any loss to its leak. We renew a leaking external seal, and a turbocharger oil pipe leak goes to a Bugatti dealer.
- Weak coolant: antifreeze lubricates the coolant pump's seal, and a Chiron's pump circulates 800 litres of water a minute. Too little antifreeze also corrodes the thermostat, so we refill a diluted circuit and renew a corroded thermostat.
- Worn ignition parts: deposits on a fouled spark plug conduct the spark to earth, and a weak coil also misfires the cylinder. We find why a plug fouled before we fit the new plug or coil.
The mean August maximum at Dubai's airport station is 41.9 °C on the 1991 to 2020 normals. Rising sand logs 17.7 days annually on the 1981 to 2010 record. Both figures add to the load on a W16's radiators and air filters.

Full output with all 4 turbochargers
A Chiron's W16 needs all 4 turbochargers in use, 2 on each bank, for its maximum power. A sealed intake and a working boost circuit let each one deliver its share.
Steady temperature at full load
On a Veyron, 2 water cycles hold the W16 inside its temperature range, even at extreme full loads. The high-temperature cycle alone moves 40 litres through 3 coolers at the front.
Cool charge air in city traffic
A Chiron's low-temperature loop stops the charge air overheating in stop-and-go driving. With its pump and radiator working, that protection holds in Dubai traffic.
Full airflow at full throttle
A Chiron pumps more than 60,000 litres of air a minute through its engine. An intact intake path lets that full volume reach the turbochargers.
Catalytic converters spared
A Chiron cleans its exhaust gas in 6 catalytic converters, the main ones about 6 times the size of a medium car's. A misfire can damage a catalytic converter, so an early repair protects them.

How does a Bugatti W16 detect a misfire or knock?
A Bugatti W16 detects misfire and knock through Bugatti Ion Current Sensing (BIS), which monitors the ion current at each spark plug. Bugatti built it because a smooth-running 16-cylinder engine makes ordinary misfire and knock detection unreliable. On a fault, BIS slows the ignition timing, deactivates the cylinder or reduces the boost pressure.
We read the stored misfire faults to find the cylinder concerned, then test its spark plug and ignition coil. We renew whichever of the 2 fails and clear the stored faults.
Bugatti's June 2020 VR17.2 package listed new software for the engine controller of the Chiron and its derivatives, BIS II included. A Bugatti dealer loads any new engine controller software.

Which Bugatti engine jobs go to a Bugatti dealer?
A Bugatti dealer takes the Bugatti engine jobs that open the engine, split the chassis or change software, and every open campaign. That covers a rebuild and other work inside the engine. We repair the ignition, cooling and intake parts that come off without opening the engine or splitting the chassis.
Bugatti's December 2024 campaign BUGCS037, issued for all markets, shows how deep such work reaches on the Centodieci and Chiron Super Sport. It renews the turbocharger oil pipes, with a new seal and check valve at each of the 4 turbochargers.
The catalytic converters and their heat shields come off before the pipes, and the chassis is set up again after reassembly. We refer a car on the campaign list to a Bugatti dealer.

The W16 passes through these steps in turn:
Pin down when the fault shows
We record the warning on the display and the state of the engine when it appears: cold or warm, idling, under load or in traffic. Each later test runs under those conditions.
Read the engine faults and live values
We note each stored engine fault with the live values beside it. The codes decide which system the next test covers.
Pressure-test both water loops
The high- and low-temperature loops each go under pressure while we watch the gauge. A falling reading confirms a leak, and we replace the hose, radiator or low-temperature pump that leaks.
Inspect the coolant for oil traces
An oily film in the coolant reservoir signals an oil cooler leak or a failed head gasket. We renew a leaking oil cooler, and head gasket work goes to a Bugatti dealer.
Compare compression across the cylinders
A compression test picks out a cylinder that builds less pressure than the others. Internal work on that cylinder goes to a Bugatti dealer.
Recheck under the first conditions
With the faults cleared, the car goes on a road test under the step 1 conditions. A final fault read then confirms the repair.

A W16 that leaks coolant gets a new hose, seal or radiator. We keep radiator sealant out of its circuit.
A flushed circuit
Foreign objects and contaminants linger in the loops once a failed cooling part comes out. Both loops get a full flush before the refill.
W16 Mistral intakes kept clear
On a W16 Mistral, the wider horseshoe grille feeds the high-temperature radiator by itself. The 2 side intakes are reserved for the intercoolers, and we clear sand from each one.

Does Bugatti engine repair in Dubai include a W16 rebuild?
No. Two experts hand-assemble each Chiron W16 from 3,712 parts over 6 days, in a Salzgitter room reserved for the engine. A rebuild therefore goes to a Bugatti dealer, and we repair the parts on and around the engine.
Why does a Chiron pull away on 2 of its 4 turbochargers?
A Chiron moves off on 2 turbochargers so that no turbo lag builds. The other 2 join at about 3,800 rpm, and each charger supplies air for about 380 PS. When the pull fades at that point, we test the boost circuit of each bank and seal any leak it shows.
Do you repair the Bugatti Tourbillon's V16?
Yes, on the combustion engine. The Tourbillon pairs its naturally aspirated V16, worth 1,000 hp alone, with 3 electric motors. A Bugatti dealer takes on those motors and the 800 V system, while we diagnose the V16 itself as we do the W16 cars.
Is the Chiron's W16 the same engine as the Veyron's?
No. Both are 8.0 litre W16 engines with 4 turbochargers, but the compact shape and the 73 mm pitch are all the Chiron kept. Bugatti developed every other part of the Chiron engine anew.
