Does my car have an electric radiator fan or a belt-driven fan?
A car has an electric radiator fan or a belt-driven fan, mounted in front of or behind the radiator. Electric fans run on the car's electrical system and switch on and off by themselves with engine temperature. Belt-driven fans take their drive from the engine by belt and pulley, and a viscous clutch sets their speed against the drive.
Electric fan control differs from model to model. Fan control in a 2024 Kia coded MQ4 answers to coolant temperature, refrigerant pressure and vehicle speed.
A viscous clutch that stays engaged, or never engages, can be worn or defective. Its test uses a laser revolution counter that compares the fan speed with the drive speed. We run that test and replace a clutch that fails it.

Can I drive with a broken radiator fan?
No. A broken fan leaves the radiator short of air at low speeds, so the engine overheats in traffic. For the Tucson NX4, Hyundai links a lit coolant temperature light to engine damage from overheating. Hyundai also tells owners to stop driving an engine that has overheated.
Why does my car overheat in traffic but not on the highway?
Air pushed through the radiator by the car's speed carries engine heat away on the highway. At slow speeds and at standstill, the fans supply that extra cooling. A fan that has stopped therefore shows itself in traffic first. We test the fan motor and its switching, then replace the part that failed.
Is it normal for the radiator fan to run with the engine off?
Yes. A 2024 Kia coded MQ4 can run its cooling fan with the engine not running, Kia states. Hyundai gives the same warning for the Tucson NX4 and adds that the fan can cause serious injury. Keep hands and tools clear of the fan after a drive.
