No response at the key or button

Silence at the key or start button means the solenoid does not engage. A dead supply, a faulty ignition switch or a broken cable stops the start signal. We repair the broken cable or replace the faulty switch.

A single clack, then nothing

A clack without cranking means the solenoid pulls in, but its main contacts pass no current to the motor. Contaminated or worn solenoid contacts cause it. We clean or replace the contacts, or fit a new solenoid switch.

Spinning without turning the engine

A starter you hear spinning while the engine stays still has a pinion that does not mesh with the ring gear. A damaged pinion, single-pinion gear or freewheel is the cause. We replace the damaged drive parts or the starter.

Grinding or rattling at start

Grinding or rattling comes from a pinion that no longer meshes cleanly with the ring gear. Damaged pinion teeth make the noise. We replace the pinion drive or the starter.

Slow or jerky cranking

Slow or jerky cranking means the motor gets too little current or cannot use it. Worn or sticking carbon brushes, a dirty collector and loose or oxidised connections cause it. We replace worn brushes, clean the collector and brush guides, and tighten the connections.

A starter that runs on

A starter that keeps whining after the engine fires is a runaway starter, turning faster than in a normal start. Turn the engine off straight away, because the overspeed damages the windings and commutator. We replace the jammed switch, relay or stuck solenoid, or repair the shorted wiring.

Full cranking power

A starter's power depends on the quality of its electrical connections. Its housing is the negative pole, so we bolt it to the engine at the specified torque for a sound ground without vibration.

A protected flywheel

A damaged pinion can go on to damage the ring gear on the flywheel. A pinion replaced at the first rattle keeps the flywheel teeth intact.

Electronics kept safe

Pulling a battery terminal with the engine running sends voltage peaks through the electronics. We disconnect the battery with the engine off.

A battery that stays charged

An alternator fault starves the battery of charge, which ends in battery failure and weak starts. We test the alternator and replace a faulty one, so the repaired starter has a charged battery behind it.

A collector saved from arcing

Carbon brushes that stick in their holders arc under the high starting current. Those arcs can destroy the collector. Brushes that move freely in their guides keep the collector intact.

A new pinion that stays whole

Loose screws, springs or clutch parts caught between the pinion and ring gear can break a pinion. We remove every foreign body and find where it came from.

Record the sound and read the codes

We note what you hear at start: silence, a clack, a whirr or a grind. On a 2024 Pajero Sport, disconnecting a battery cable erases stored fault data, so we read the fault codes first.

Measure the supply with meters

We measure the battery and the positive and ground supply to the starter using a clip-on ammeter and a multimeter. No part of the circuit is tested by shorting it.

Bridge terminals 30 and 50

Bridging terminals 30 and 50 at the starter shows whether the start signal arrives at the solenoid. Feeding the battery cable straight to the contact screw below terminal 30 then tests the motor on its own. We then repair the side of the circuit the test condemns.

Inspect the pinion and ring gear

With the starter out, we check the pinion teeth and the flywheel ring gear. A ring gear with damaged teeth is replaced before the new starter goes in.

Mount the starter true

We clean the clutch housing so the new pinion drive does not paste up again. The starter is centred, its screws are tightened evenly, and damaged or missing centring bushes are replaced. Uneven tension in the mounting can crack the end shield that guides the pinion shaft.

Seal the B+ terminal and test

We clean the harness contacts and the B+ surfaces, align the cable and tighten it to the specified torque. Contact protection grease and a sound cap keep moisture out. A test start then confirms a clean mesh and release.

Circuit tested before the starter

We check the battery, the cables and connectors and the ignition starter switch before we replace a starter. A fault in any of them makes a sound starter look dead.

No hammer tests

Ferrite magnets inside the housing are brittle, so we never strike a starter to test it. It is supported through removal and fitting, so it takes no hard knock.

The right grease, a sealed housing

We grease the drive with suitable grease or the grease the car maker approves. Every cover plate and sealing plug on the clutch housing goes back in place.

Correct part, original fixings

We fit the starter part number for your car with its original screws and washers. The mounting is never adapted to make a different starter fit.

Oil leaks sealed with the job

We repair the leaking crankshaft oil seal or valve cover seal when oil has reached the starter. The area where the starter sits is then cleaned.

Misfires repaired

Faulty ignition coils or spark plugs left in the engine cause misfires that overstrain a starter. We replace them when a starter job turns up a misfire.
