What are the signs of a Cadillac transmission problem?
A Cadillac transmission problem gives 6 signs, from dash messages to rough shifts and leaks. They are a transmission hot message, shudder, a shifter service message, fluid under the car, a recalled CT4 or CT5 and rear wheels that lock. We read the gearbox module first, then repair what each sign leads to.
Harsh shifts or shudder on an Escalade
On an L87 or LT4 Escalade, GM links harsh shifts, shudder, surge and overheating on low-kilometre cars to a twisted cooler line. An electronic range select gearbox can also store code P27EC. We untwist or replace the line at the auxiliary cooler, then check the fluid level.
A SERVICE SHIFTER message
This message tells an Escalade or CT5 driver that the electronic shift lever needs service. On a CT5, Cadillac also has the P button on top of the lever checked for sticking. We read the shifter codes, then release a stuck button or repair the lever, wiring or connector at fault.
Fluid under the car
Cadillac names a leak as the one cause of fluid loss on a 2025 CT5. On a 2026 Escalade, an overheated transmission is the second cause. Once we find the leak, we seal it and bring the fluid back up to its mark.
Harsh shifts on a recalled CT4 or CT5
In the 2025 Qatar recall of 2020 and 2021 CT4 and CT5 models, a worn transmission control valve loses pressure bit by bit. That pressure loss can bring harsh gear changes. We road-test the shifts, confirm whether the campaign is done and hand an unfinished one to a Cadillac dealer.
Rear wheels that lock on a 2022 Escalade
Qatar recalled 2022 Escalades in June 2026 for a transmission control unit defect that can lock the rear wheels for a moment. A Saudi recall that month covers 490 GM cars of 2022, the Escalade among them, for a control valve defect that drops pressure. We match the car to both notices, and a Cadillac dealer carries out any recall still due.

- Heat: oil in a hot-running gearbox ages faster. Our fix swaps the heat-aged fluid for a fresh fill.
- Wrong fluid: Cadillac warns that the wrong automatic transmission fluid harms the car. We drain that fluid and fill the gearbox afresh.
- High engine speed at a shift: on a 2025 CT5, a shift from P or N while the engine revs high can damage the transmission. We road-test the shifts and repair the wear this leaves.
- Over-revving in manual mode: on a 2026 Escalade, holding high engine speed without upshifting can damage the vehicle. Our code read and road test locate that damage, and we repair it.
- 4WD on dry roads: on an Escalade, extended driving in 4HI or 4LO on clean, dry pavement risks overheating, oil leaks and front axle damage. We check the transfer case and front axle, seal leaks and renew the fluid.
- Power-washed seals: on an Escalade or CT5, high pressure water aimed at the transfer case or axle output seals contaminates the transfer case fluid. That shortens the life of the transfer case and axles, so we replace the spoiled fluid.

Which transmission fluid does a Cadillac take?
A Cadillac takes one of 3 GM automatic transmission fluids, set by model. DEXRON ULV fills the 2025 CT5 and the 2019 CT6, and DEXRON-VI the 2023 XT4, XT5 and XT6 and the 2019 XTS. The 2019 ATS and CTS take DEXRON-HP, and our refill follows that list for each car.
Under severe service, a 2025 CT5 has its gearbox fluid and filter changed every 70,000 km, and a 2023 XT5 its fluid. Severe service in their manuals covers regular towing, high sand or dust, and short trips no longer than 6 km.

How is a Cadillac transfer case looked after?
A Cadillac transfer case runs on its own fluid, changed on its own schedule. A 2026 Escalade with 4WD, the V-Series aside, has that fluid changed every 160,000 km, or 80,000 km under severe service. We check its level against the bottom of the fill plug hole and change it when due.
The 2026 Escalade has a 2-speed or a 1-speed transfer case, and the 2-speed adds 4LO and a Neutral setting kept for towing. Cadillac calls an engagement noise and bump normal when the 2-speed shifts between 4LO and 4HI or Neutral with the engine running. Its transfer case holds 1.5 litres of fluid.
On a 2023 XT5 with AWD, the transfer case needs no maintenance in normal driving unless it leaks or makes an unusual noise. A 2022 UAE recall of 20 Escalades of 2021 covers a drive shaft joint that can seize and cut drive. We inspect that joint, and a Cadillac dealer fits the recall repair.

Inspect the lines, pan and seals
On the lift, we follow the cooler lines from the gearbox to the auxiliary cooler and check the pan and seals for seepage.
Judge the drained fluid
A burnt odour, chips or flakes of metal in the drained fluid show internal damage. The pan magnet's load of particles shows the amount of abrasion. A gearbox with internal damage is rebuilt by a Cadillac dealer.
Refill by GM's level procedure
A 2026 Escalade or 2025 CT5 has no transmission dipstick, and GM sets a special procedure for checking and changing its fluid. We fill the gearbox and set the level by that procedure.
Road-test, then rescan the module
Once warm, the car is driven through every gear, and a second module scan confirms that no code returns.

Using the accelerator to hold an Escalade or CT5 on a slope, or spinning the tyres hard, can damage the transmission. Hold the car with the brakes instead.

On a 2026 Escalade, select a gear once the 4WD indicator stops flashing. A gear selected before then can damage the transfer case.

Can I keep driving with the transmission hot message on?
No. Cadillac warns that driving with the fluid too hot can damage the vehicle. Stop, let the engine idle until the message clears, then book a check of the gearbox cooling.
How is a broken-down Cadillac moved?
On a flatbed, with no drive axle tyre on the road, as GM recommends for the 2026 Escalade and 2025 CT5. An Escalade that has lost 12 V power cannot be shifted to N. Tyre skates or dollies then go under the wheels that do not roll.
Is N fine for a long wait in a CT5?
No. A 2025 CT5 is not built to stay in N for long, and it can shift itself into P. Car Wash Mode is the setting that keeps it in N through an automatic car wash.
