A failing BMW battery shows 5 signs: a battery warning, a slow crank, an inactive start-stop, limited comfort functions and repeat flat batteries. All but the comfort sign can also come from a fault outside the battery, so we test the battery before we replace it.
BMW shows "Increased battery discharge!" in the Central Information Display at start-up, and "Battery charge level low!" can follow. On the F01, F02, F07, F10, F12, F13 and F25 built up to April 2013, the message also appeared with a healthy battery. BMW traced that to a battery sensor software error.

The starter turns over more slowly than usual, especially after the car has sat in a hot car park all day. A low charge and plate ageing both cut the current the battery delivers at start-up. We measure the resting voltage first: about 12.8 V is ideal, and a battery below 12.4 V needs a charge before its test.
The test then shows whether the battery holds a charge or needs replacing.
BMW lists a heavily discharged battery as one reason the engine does not switch off at a stop. A second reason is high outside temperature with the climate control on, so an inactive start-stop in summer is no proof of a weak battery. We read the battery's state of charge before we replace it.
A new battery that was never registered leaves the car charging it as if the old battery were still fitted. BMW calls for registration so that all comfort features work and their Check Control messages clear. We register the battery, or correct an earlier replacement that skipped the step.
A battery that keeps going flat points to a second fault: the alternator, a control unit that stays awake, or a high closed-circuit current. BMW instructs its technicians to treat a failed battery as a possible symptom of another fault. We read the closed-circuit current checks the car has stored before we order a battery.

BMW battery failure in Dubai has 6 causes: heat, short trips, parked drains, the wrong battery type, charging faults and an N63 V8 link. Heat ages every lead-acid battery, because its chemical reactivity roughly doubles with every 10 °C rise, so the other causes bite harder in summer.

Yes. A new BMW battery needs registration so the energy management stops treating it as the old, aged battery. An aged battery has less usable capacity and accepts charge differently, and the car keeps charging for that state until registration resets the stored history.
A battery of the same capacity needs only a registration. A change of capacity, such as a 90 Ah AGM to a 105 Ah AGM, also takes a complete coding of the car. A change of battery type can need coding too, so we check the car's build data before we order.
BMW's instructions put the energy diagnosis before registration, because registration deletes the energy history that the diagnosis reads. We follow that order, and we leave the fault memory untouched until the diagnosis is done.

We charge a flat battery before testing it, which takes 1 to 6 hours depending on its size and state. The car then rests for at least 3 hours, so the battery sensor reports a true state of charge.
We run the energy diagnosis, which reads the charge history and the closed-circuit current checks stored in the car. The result shows whether the battery, the alternator or a drain caused the fault.
We read the battery type and capacity the car was built with. We order that battery, or a larger one only when the car is then coded for it.

A BMW battery lasts far longer in Dubai when it is the AGM type the car was built with. In a battery maker's 12-month test on 60 Dubai taxis, every conventional battery failed within about 5 to 6 months. The AGM batteries lasted the whole year with over 75% of their capacity left.
The taxis ran 19 hours a day and 14,000 km a month, a far heavier load than a private BMW carries. No battery maker publishes a life for private cars in the UAE.

BMW advises charging the battery when the car makes frequent short trips or stands unused for longer than a month. A battery maintainer, a charger that holds the battery at full charge, keeps it charged while you travel in summer.
