A car shows 6 signs that call for detailing and polishing. The paint carries 4 of them: lost gloss, swirl marks, deposit marks and stone chips. The other 2 are black brake dust on the wheels and fine dust through the cabin.
Flat, faded paint shows the early stages of clear coat weathering: yellowing, colour change and a loss of gloss. Cracking and peeling are the 2 failures at the end of that process. We bring back the gloss on sound clear coat in the polishing step, and our body shop refinishes a panel that has cracked or peeled.
Swirl marks are fine scratches in the clear coat that show up when the sun hits the panel. We level them in the polishing step, working one panel at a time.
A dull patch where bird droppings, insects or tree resin dried shows where a deposit marked the paint. Mercedes-Benz gives the 2017 E-Class W213 a water soak for droppings, insect remover, tar remover and petroleum ether for resin. We treat each deposit by its type in that way on every make, before any polish goes on.
Brake dust collects on the wheel faces and between the spokes. Mercedes-Benz rules out acidic wheel cleaners for brake dust on the E-Class W213, because they can damage the wheel bolts and brake components. We clean every wheel with water and a wheel cleaner that holds no acid.
